that had gotten her through the last two years was her faith in Jesus Christ.
“Being politically correct is not always the best way to go and I really learned that on that day so many years ago! What that couple did for us was true discipleship.
“You have helped me tremendously in the last few years with your teaching me to use my bible more and to quiet myself to listen to how God is trying to lead me. I may not ever feel adequate in my discipleship but I do know that Jesus Christ will never give up on me.”
Jean is right. It can be difficult to be a disciple and to make disciples. Jesus never said it would be easy. We are afraid and uncertain. We are filled with self-doubt. Jesus calls us to be disciples not because we are adequate … but because Jesus is!
Jesus lived, served, suffered, died and rose again so we could become his people who are sent out into the world on his behalf. He wants all of us—every part of our lives. Not just on Sunday mornings when we decide we can spare an hour and squeeze God into our busy lives. We are called to be disciples and make disciples of Jesus Christ 24-7. As a new friend of mine, Rhonda Hawley, likes to say, “NOTHING is wasted... Make it COUNT... CHRIST IS COUNTING ON YOU!!” And I am counting on Christ! Pastor Andrew Schlecht
Dear Kindred Family,
What does it mean to be a disciple? Here is an inspiring response from our very own Jean Hertsgaard:
“Well, here I go on discipleship. I feel that I am always struggling with discipleship. Two reasons—I get self-absorbed and I am always trying to be politically correct. I want to be a disciple but find myself missing opportunities because I am thinking of my own needs first or don't want to offend.
“Let me share a story with you that had a tremendous impact on me. When we lived in Hong Kong I was close friends with a very wealthy woman from Indonesia whose husband was a relative of the royal family. One day, one of her maids came running to our flat with my friend's son collapsed in her arms. He was not breathing and my friend was not at home. We started CPR on him while someone went to the front gate of our complex and had a guard call for an ambulance. We got him breathing by the time an ambulance arrived and I knew which hospital my friend would want her son to go to, so I hopped in the ambulance.
“By some miracle, as I was in the ambulance going to the hospital I saw my friend in her car on her
way home. I shouted to the driver and my friend somehow felt that the ambulance was for her so she pulled over on a busy road and ran to the ambulance. I knew that my friend was not a Christian and I wanted to be somewhat generic so I would not offend her during this stressful time. I gave her comfort and I knew it was my faith that was carrying me yet I was worried that she would get angry if I brought it up. At the emergency room, the medical team quickly whisked away my friend's son and left the two of us in the waiting room crying.
“We had been in the waiting room for about 15 minutes when another couple who was there approached us. They apologized for overhearing us but said that they were Christians and asked if they could pray with us. I looked at my friend not knowing what would happen and she said, ‘Yes!’ We all held hands and they prayed out loud for us. I felt the hand of God on our shoulders that day.
“My friend's son died of cancer two years later and I received a letter from her with the news. Also in the letter she told me that she had become a Christian and that the day in the hospital when the couple prayed with us had a profound effect on her. She told me that the only thing

Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again…. Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (John 3:3,5-6). As Christians, our baptismal birthday is more important than our birthday! “I am baptized!” Baptism makes all the difference!
Thank you to our incredible choir that proclaims God Word and praises his name with music! Special thank you to our Choir Director, LaVonne Nokleberg, and Music Coordinator, Cheryl Rostad!

Applying Biblical Principles of Stewardship “Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work — this is a gift of God” (Eccl. 5:19).
Don’t you just love gifts? There is great satisfaction both in getting gifts and in giving them. Since we are created in the image of God, it stands to reason that He also must take great delight in giving and receiving gifts.
All that we have comes from His hand, but in particular, Solomon indicated that money and riches and the ability to enjoy them are gifts from God. In other words, God gives us that which is rightfully His, and then He allows us the enjoyment of wealth and money. As we enjoy what He has entrusted to us, no doubt He takes great pleasure in our enjoyment if our actions are in conformity to His Word and His will.
How can we be sure that our enjoyment of money and wealth is according to God’s plan? The Bible contains a great deal of specific instruction as to how we are to use money, but this guiding principle is to motivate our entire lives, including the use and enjoyment of wealth: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31).
There’s nothing wrong with money. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the things that money can buy. Solomon was correct when he said that both are gifts from God. The key is to use money in such a way that our enjoyment will bring glory to God. One of the primary ways to do that is to give to the Lord and His work here at Kindred Lutheran Church.
During the past few months, have you kept God’s glory — especially giving to Him — as the number one priority in your use of money? Or have other things taken the place of your giving to God?
“Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work — this is a gift of God”
(Eccl. 5:19).
A summer kids’ event called Everest VBS will be hosted at Kindred Lutheran Church from July 27 to July 30. At Everest, kids discover what it means to hold on to God’s mighty power in everyday life. Kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, make and dig into yummy treats, experience one-of-a-kind Bible adventures, collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them of God’s love, and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes with a Summit Celebration that gets everyone involved in living what they’ve learned. Kids at Everest VBS will join an international missions effort to provide Thai-language children’s Bibles to kids in Thailand. Everest is for kids from age 4 to 5th grade and will run from 6:00 PM to 8:15 PM each day. For more information, call Kari Johnson (866-4469). Youth and Volunteers can REGISTER on line at KindredLutheran.com/Grow.html
