Past Retreat Day – June 2015

„Fairy Tales in Real Venice“

Created by La Venessiana:

An early morning walk. A fine summer day

in late June 2015. Discovering secret and

not-so-secret links between Venice and the

Levant. Byzantium. Levantine breakfast

with Turkish coffee. Cappuccino for some.

The specialty - apple-marzipan filled

cornetto. Plus, La Venessiana’s “Culinary

Venessián” language course. .

Fruity berry cakelets. Fresh

from the Dolomiti mountains.

Hazelnut cornetti. And torta

greca, of course.

Telling the lives of Greek,

Dalmatian and Levantine

merchants. Their hanging

kitchen gardens and summer

soup recipes.

Tales on the 53,000

inhabitants of Byzantium, and

their heritage to their new

hometown Venice.

Visiting botanical treasures of

this part of town. Figs and

olives. Silk trees.

Unearthing ancient Greek

recipes, passed on exclusively to Venetians..

Discovering

secret gardens

with giant water

lilies.

“Was there a market

place in Levantine

Venice. Like a souk or

bazaar? If yes, are there still traces ?”

Now this is a real treat. We look for shade

in a citrus grove. Looks like it is miles

away from the crowds. All you hear is

chirping birds. We enjoy a leisurely

aperitif in this luxurious oasis,

called Vivaldi‘s Garden.

Visiting the most ancient church

in this area. Its archeological

and exhibition sites. Telling the

story of Venice three thousand

years ago. Tales of origins –

whose origins? We participate

in the process of unearthing

lost history.

Back in the heart of Venice.

Origins re-discovered..

Visiting the home of a

dogal family, intimately

connected to the Levant.

Finally, we are heading for lunch.

In the oldest hotel lounge in Venice.

It‘s a light, Levant-style, spicy fish

soup. For Venetians used special

spice mixtures in summer.

This Retreat Day will be also

available as book (e-book and

print) from June 2016.
