The Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center is excited to announce a new multi-level Beekeeping Certificate program. This intensive three-step program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of honey bees and beekeeping. The three levels of certification are as follows: Beginner Beekeeping, Intermediate Beekeeping, and Advanced Beekeeping. The three-month Beginner Beekeeper Certificate is currently accepting students for its September 2017 launch.

The program is designed to support both new and seasoned beekeepers through an entire apiary year. During the Beginner Beekeeping Certificate, participants will learn about honey bee biology, beekeeping equipment, care of bees throughout the year, apiary production, and environmental challenges. By the end of this course, participants will be able to manage honey bee colonies for maximum bee health and honey production. Upon successful completion of the course, students will earn a Beginner Beekeeping certificate and will be prepared to take the Intermediate Beekeeping Certificate program, which is set to begin Winter 2018. These programs support a beekeeper's preparation for the Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS) of North America’s nationally recognized Master Beekeeping Examination.

Classes start September 14, 2017 and will run every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. until November 16, 2017. The cost is $250 for the certificate which includes 10 sessions and handouts. The program will be held at the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center (LCEEC), 93 MacKenzie Road, Covington Township.

Mushroom Walk with Nathaniel Whitmore, Herbalist

During this leisurely walk in search of mushrooms, herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore will show participants identification techniques and will discuss how to differentiate between poisonous and nonpoisonous mushrooms, and in what types of environments they can be found. The sustainable practices of harvesting will also be discussed.

Bio-Harmonic Evening Hike with Dr. Vincent Marshall

Join biologist Dr. Vincent Marshall on this guided evening sounds hike along the trails of LCEEC. Will we

hear insects, owls, or other night creatures? The fall nights are full of sounds; learn who's calling once

the sun goes down! A backup indoor program will be provided in the event of inclement weather or

an early frost.

Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases in PA with Mike Leggiero of Sandcut Outdoors

Do you spend time outdoors? Have pets? Live in a rural setting? Join local biologist Mike Leggiero of Sandcut Outdoors to learn about Pennsylvania ticks, the diseases they carry, and how to prevent getting a tick-borne disease (TBD). Current testing methods and controversy regarding the various schools of thought surrounding Lyme disease will be discussed. This workshop is appropriate for ages 12 to adult.

Live Birds of Prey! with The Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Center

Get up-close and personal with LIVE raptors! Meet a falcon, an owl, and

a hawk during this fun and informative program with the Pocono Wildlife

Rehab Center. Discover the human connection we have to the raptor

food chain and how important avian adaptations are for the survival of

these birds of prey. Learn how the resident birds were injured and how

they are rehabilitated. Geared to all ages.

Live PA Mammals! with Second Chance Wildlife Center

Get up-close and personal with LIVE native mammals! Join Angie

Colarusso, founder of Second Chance Wildlife Center, as she introduces

us to some of her furry friends. Learn about wildlife rehabilitation and

mammal adaptations during this LIVE animal show. Geared to all ages.

Live Reptiles & Amphibians Show with Naturalist, Rick Koval

Get up-close and personal with native snakes, frogs, salamanders, and turtles! WNEP TV Pennsylvania Outdoor Life’s field naturalist Rick Koval will teach participants about these fascinating reptiles and amphibians and their role in the environment during this LIVE animal show. Be sure to bring a camera! Geared to all ages.

Natural Wonders A Program Series for Early Explorers

Sept. 20, 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Fall Harvest

After learning about the vegetables we planted in the spring, we will have a taste test and gather seeds to sow next year.

Oct. 4, 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Insect Safari

What has six legs, compound eyes, and wings? Children will learn about insect characteristics and search for different types of insects.

Oct. 18, 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Bats!

Get batty while learning about these fascinating flying mammals! Discover what they eat and play a game to see how they hunt in the dark.

Nov. 1, 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Fur, Feathers, & Scales

Children will get an up-close look at fur, feathers, and scales and discover how these adaptations help animals to survive.

Nov. 15, 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Animal Aerobics

Exercise your mind and body as we imitate animal movements. Hike the trails and learn how animals move to escape from predators and to find food.

Nov. 29, 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Animals in Winter

It’s Winter! Do you know which animals are napping? Who is on vacation until spring? Find out as we search for animal clues.

Classes run every other Wednesday from Sept. 20th to Nov. 29th. Classes will be conducted indoors and outdoors with themes that change seasonally. Please dress children appropriately for weather conditions. The cost is $40 for the six class series or $8 for individual classes, if seats are available. Registration and pre-payment required.

Conservation and Natural Resource Officer Certificate program

Field Trips to LCEEC School field trip programs combine hands-on activities with an exploratory walk on LCEEC’s 211-acre property and meet many of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology and Science and Technology.

Tax Credit Program.

Applications are being accepted for Fall 2017

During this 15-week program, students will complete five hands-on undergraduate level field biology courses. The curriculum focuses on native Pennsylvania plants and animals, and the conservation and interpretation of our natural environment. Specific courses include: Environmental Interpretation, Wildlife Management, Freshwater Ecosystems, Dendrology, and Ornithology. Students will experience both classroom and hands-on field training throughout the program by using LCEEC’s living laboratory, a 211-acre property of diverse habitat in Covington Township, PA.

The CNRO certificate is appropriate for anyone seeking a career as a park ranger or related field. Students may also take courses individually. Courses are also transferable into a two- or four-year environmental studies program. Financial aid is available. The program will run from Sept. 6th to Dec. 15th, 2017. Natural Wonders is a unique program series for children ages 3-6 and a guardian that offers discovery-based learning about the natural world through stories, art, and outdoor explorations!

Discovery Hike Insect Safari Animal Adaptations PA Mammals Stream Explorations

Birthday parties cost $200 for a 1-hour program, which includes the use of LCEEC’s facility for one hour after the program, for up to 15 children. Additional children are $7 per child for a maximum of 20 children. Adults are free. LCEEC will provide tables, chairs, recycling, and garbage bins.
