from G12Status

Multi-Model Comparisons - Lake Kinneret (Israel)

•Gideon Gal and Sandy Ng are currently working on a 1D vs 3D model comparison for Lake Kinneret .•The work is ongoing.•If necessary (and practical), Gideon or Sandy may contact members of the working group to contribute.

•A study on DYRESM-CAEDYM vs. GLM-FABM for Lake Kinneret will soon be underway (Louise Bruce, Gideon Gal, Matthew Hipsey).

Multi-Model Comparisons - Lake Engelsholm (Denmark)

•Dennis Trolle has DYRESM-CAEDYM and PCLake running for Lake Engelsholm (a relatively shallow, biomanipulated Danish lake).•Alex Elliott will apply PROTECH to this lake.

•Application of GLM-FABM is planned (Dennis Trolle and Matthew Hipsey). •Application of CE-QUAL-W2 is also desirable but not planned.

•A model comparison paper focusing on structural uncertainty and the effects of model complexity on predictive capability is planned for 2012.

Multi-Model Comparisons - Diagenesis Models

•Dan Paraska (Ph.D. student with Matthew Hipsey, UWA) has a review paper in prep.

Online Parameter Database •Google spreadsheet configuration has recently been updated•Available via AEMON site (https://sites.google.com/site/aquaticmodelling/Resources)•Continue Work at GLEON 13

Status

Development of Open Source Models •Alpha-version is completed.•UWA group (Matthew Hipsey) has DO-Si-NO3-NH4-PO4-POC/DOC-PON/DON-POP/DOP dynamics and multi-phytoplankton implemented with FABM and GLM Model. •Beta-version will be released before December 2011.

•Karsten Bolding (Developer of GETM, a 3D hydrodynamics model) is currently working part-time at Aarhus University (with Dennis Trolle) and helping with open source model development.

Status

Development of Open Source Models(Continued)

•A full 3 year Ph.D. scholarship will soon be offered jointly by Aarhus University and Southern Danish University (starting early 2012). The Ph.D. student is to be based in Denmark and work on Lake Fure (the deepest lake in Denmark), and apply and further develop the FABM.•If interested, please contact Dennis Trolle for further information.

•Community-model concept paper has been submitted (currently under review) with 24 authors including 9 GLEON authors.

•Hands-on workshop for core model developers is planned to run within the next 12 months .•It will be announced on the AEMON site https://sites.google.com/site/aquaticmodelling/

Next StepsGLEON 13

•Continue developing parameter database with definitions and ranges from literature.

•Define new ecological metrics to validate models (and develop scripts/models that can easily calculate/derive these from model outputs and observations).

•Work with the climate and physics group on modelling the effects of climate change on many lakes across several gradients (e.g. latitude, area, depth, color).

•Explore predictive models that recreate high-frequency signals (temp, DO, pigment fluorescence) measured by many GLEON lakes.

•Develop means of sharing open source models with GLEON membership.

NOTE: Hands-on exercises using new open source model(s) should be ready for G14…

News on model releases, developments ,and test cases, etc. will be announced here.
