On December 10, 2011 Las Adeli-tas Arizona hosted a Posada to Benefit Save Ethnic Studies at the Mercado San Agustin on Tucson’s West-side, and raised $4,000 in
support of the organization!
Save Ethnic Studies (SES)is a non-profit legal defense fund established to help finance the law-suit fighting to protect Mexican American Studies within the Tuc-
son Unified School District.
Last year, Las Adelitas AZ passed a resolution in support of SES, and cited the incredible effi-cacy of the MAS program in TUSD with respect to Latino student achievement. These classes, per the districts own data, have demon-
strated a near inversion of the achieve-ment gap for Latino youth in our com-
munity.
Las Adelitas AZ is fully committed to supporting the edu-cators and students of SES, and wants to thank all the Adelitas and community mem-bers that joined us at the posada for their

Las Adelitas Arizona applauds the efforts of Citizens for a Better Arizona (CBA) for leading the effort to Recall former State Sen-
ate President Russell Pearce.
In 2010, Las Adelitas AZ, along with many other organizations, took a position against SB 1070. As the architect of this discriminatory legislation, Russell Pearce was a symbolic leader of the growing
anti-immigrant sentiment in state
and local politics.
The successful recall of the former legislator has garnered national attention, and marked a turning point in the tone of political rhetoric with respect to Latino
issues in our state.
In the Fall of 2011, Las Adelitas Arizona gave financially to
Las Adelitas Arizona would like to congratulate former Adelitas Chair Wendy Ceval-los for being honored by the Arizona Daily Star as one of Tucson’s 40 Under 40 Lead-
ers!
Adelitas members gathered earlier this Fall at the Doubletree Hotel to celebrate the recognition of local Tucson leaders by the Arizona Daily Star, including our very own Wendy
Cevallos.

among students.
Several members of Las Adelitas Arizona were young mothers themselves and will be joining the school panel on Wednesday, January
18th, 2012.
One Adelita, for-mer board member Karla Avalos-Soto, was a student of TAPP and has since gradu-ated, raised her family, and
established a successful career at
a local non-profit organization.
Karla and several other Adelitas will be on hand the 18th to discuss the struggles unique to young parents and provide tips to young people working towards a prosperous
future while raising a family.
If you are interested in attending or have additional panel recommendations, please contact Vice-Chair Deya Nevarez at dey-

Las Adelitas Arizona hosts annual school panels at high schools within our community. These school panels feature Adelitas and prominent Latinas in the community speaking in a panel format to students at local high schools about overcoming obstacles and achiev-
ing success.
This year, Las Adelitas Ari-zona will be hosting our annual school panel at Sunnyside Unified High School District’s Teenage Parent Program, or
TAPP.
TAPP is a program designed for young parents, and works to assure that pregnant and parenting teens re-

The Las Adelitas Arizona Candidate Review Committee, or CRC, is an ad hoc committee of Las Adelitas Ari-zona members that comes together in anticipation of local election cycles. This past year, in 2011, the CRC
researched local issues and recommended endorsements in City of Tucson races.
Las Adelitas Arizona is preparing to participate in the 2012 election cycle, and we need member support!
Working with the CRC is a great experience and provides great insight on candidate priori-ties and the electoral process. If you are interested, please email us at Lasadelitasarizona@gmail.com or join us at the next general membership meeting on January 21st, 2012 at the Mission Branch
library at 11:30am.
Las Adelitas Arizona needs member support for the 2012
Candidate Review Committee!
The committee will be responsible for working together to determine priority races, craft pledge forms and questionnaires, interview candi-dates, and make recommenda-tions to the general member-
ship.

We are happy to report that all candidates endorsed by our members were elected and re-elected! Congratulations to
our advocates on the Tucson City Council!
In Summer of 2011, Las Adelitas Arizona members voted to endorse the Candidate Review Committee Recommendations for Tucson City Council and support Mayoral candidate Jonathan Rothschild, City Councilor Regina Romero for Ward 1, and
City Councilor Shirley Scott for Ward 4.
Las Adelitas Arizona identified several priority issues at the local level, including parks & recreation programming such as KIDCO, locally controlled and accessible urban transit, support for expanded voter enfranchisement & partisan elec-
