LEAD Africa Fellowship
LEAD Arica, LEAD International and the Shell Foundation have come
together to create what they hope will be the premier leadership
development programme in Arica.
Building on LEAD Aricas 15 years o experience, they will train over 500
mid-career leaders each year rom dierent sectors, cultures and countries
across the continent in both leadership skills and sustainable development.
These leaders will then become part o a pan-Arican leaders network that
will continue to work together or a prosperous, socially equitable and
environmentally sustainable Arican uture.

Key Elements of the Initiative
Green shoots o hope or a better uture are emerging across Arica,
and leadership is critically important to turn these green shoots
into solid, sustainable development. Political leadership is o course
a necessity, but equally good governance in all sectors and at all levels
o society is crucial to Aricas uture. The programme will seek
to equip a new generation o Arican leaders - business leaders,
community leaders, media leaders, government leaders, civil society
leaders, academic leaders - with the skills and networks necessary
or eective change.
Poverty and environmental degradation still blight the lives o millions
o Aricans and emerging threats such as climate change and rapid
urbanisation present major challenges. The programme will provide
leaders with a good understanding o sustainable development -
economic growth, social equity and environmental protection - and
the skills and knowledge to meet the challenges o a changing world.
The programme will encourage graduates to continue to collaborate
and work together ater their training is over, through LEAD
Associations and individually, or positive change to a sustainable
Arican uture. The programme will build on LEADs experience in this
area and seek to provide opportunities or active alumni engagement,
in Arica and worldwide.
The programme will be piloted in 2010 in Kenya and Senegal with
a view to roll-out in 2011 in multiple locations across Arica.
Using an initial investment o up to $12 million rom the Shell
Foundation, the ounding partners will seek to bring in other partners
and create an endowment und o $50 million. This will make the
programme sel-sustaining and able to spend $2 million per year
in perpetuity.

Te Programme
LEAD Arica will target mid-career Arican proessionals o both genders, aged between
25 and 40, rom business, government, NGOs, academia and the media.
Participants will be accepted ollowing a competitive application process. Selected candidates
need to be at the right point in their career path to respond to, and deliver, change. Each participant
will have a personal development plan to expand their leadership abilities.
Initial training consists o two intensive modules each lasting one week, as well as a web-based
platorm that delivers learning and provides opportunities or interaction with Arican leaders.
A selected number o participants will also be invited to attend an annual pan-Arican one week
leadership conerence and a global session arranged by LEAD International.
The programme will be Arican-led and have a distinct Arican identity, and strict quality monitoring
will occur. Scholarships will be available to ensure the quality o applicants - rather than the abilityto pay - remains the principal actor in the selection process.
An awards scheme will be developed and launched during the 2010 pilot. The awards will reect
a range o individual and team achievements and may be supported by corporate partners.
It will also reward action by alumni and increase the interactivity o the network.

LEAD Fellows
Graduates o the fagship leadership programme are known as LEAD Fellows. To date,
more than 400 leaders have completed the programme in Arica and they have continued
to work together and collaborate once their training is over.
This talent bank provides a shared resource or Arican leaders and organisations to use
in creating sustainable solutions to the development challenges acing the Continent.
Arican graduates join a global alumni network o more than 2,000 LEAD Fellows - with many
associations unctioning actively at a regional, national or thematic level - to encourage urther
learning, inormation and collaboration. In a world o increasing global interdependence, this
network provides invaluable linkages to Aricans.
Measuring SuccessOn the oundations o LEAD Aricas experience, a new curriculum is being developed.
Pilot programmes have been designed, the governance model put in place and the
selection process or pilot participants is ready to begin.
The pilot will be constantly monitored to ensure that all aspects o the programme - including
management, curriculum content and methodology - are ocused and meet key objectives.
Participants completing the course will be asked to evaluate the eectiveness o the trainingand core aculty. Well-defned key perormance indicators will allow ongoing monitoring.
By 2015, we want LEAD Arica to be recognised as the Continents pre-eminent leadership
development programme. It should be sel-sustaining, stable, have a clear Arican identity
and actively engage and learn rom all partners.
