GrammaticaIndefinite articles
The indefinite article singular is ‘een’, both for nouns that take ‘het’ and nouns that take ‘de’ as their definite article.A plural indefinite article doesn’t exist. In the table below you’ll find an overview of Dutch articles.

GrammaticaStem
If you want to conjugate Dutch verbs, you first have to know how to take the stem of a verb. For many verbs this is really the easiest part. Just take the infinitive and remove the final –en:
springen springhouden houddansen dans
There are, however, some spelling rules that make things more complicated:rennen renspelen speelleren leer
A complete overview of the Dutch spelling rules can be found at dutchgrammar.com.It’s strongly suggested that you read this, since it forms the base of all Dutch spelling. If you are already familiar with Dutch spelling, you can read a summary here.
GrammaticaPresent tense
Once you’ve found the stem you can form the present tense:
ik stem
je stem + t
hij stem + t
we infinitive
jullie infinitive
ze infinitive
dansen springen spelen rennen leren
ik dans ik spring ik speel ik ren ik leer
je danst je springt je speelt je rent je leert
hij danst hij springt hij speelt hij rent hij leert
we dansen we springen we spelen we rennen we leren
jullie dansen jullie springen jullie spelen jullie rennen jullie leren
ze dansen ze springen ze spelen ze rennen ze leren
Mevrouw Jansen helpt:The forms for ‘ze/zij’ singular and for ‘het’ are the same as the one listed here for ‘hij’.
GrammaticaHouden van - conjugation
The verb ‘houden van’ (to like or to love) is an example of a verb linked to a preposition.‘Houden’ without ‘van’ means ‘to hold’ or ‘to keep’, but adding the little word ‘van’ changes its meaning completely.
Ik hou(d) van
Je houdt van mind the –dt (pronounced as ‘t’)
Hij houdt van
We houden van
Jullie houden van
Ze houden van
The final -d in ‘ik houd’ is hardly ever pronounced and not always written.
The same happens for some verbs that end in –ijden (rijden, snijden, glijden).
GrammaticaHouden van - use
After ‘houden van’ you can put almost everything you like:
A verb: We houden van dansen (we like dancing)
A plural noun: Hij houdt van boeken (he likes books)
A personal pronoun: Ik hou van jou (I love you)
GrammaticaWord order – Main sentence
The basic word order for a Dutch sentence is
Ik lees een boek. I read a book.
subject verb object
But in contrast to English, when there are more verbs in a sentence, all verbs, except the finite verb, go to the end of the sentence:
Ik wil een boek lezen I want to read a book
subject finite verb object other verbs
A rule to remember:
In a main sentence, the finite verb is ALWAYS at the second place.
GrammaticaWord order – Questions
To change a sentence into a question the subject and the finite verb change place.
Lees ik een boek? Do I read a book?
Pay attention when de subject is ‘jij’.
If ‘jij’ follows the finite verb, no ‘t’ is added to the stem.
Jij leest een boek. You read a book.
Lees jij een boek? Do you read a book?
This rule only applies to ‘jij’, not to ‘u’!
U leest een boek. You (formal) read a book.
Leest u een boek? Do you (formal) read a book?
