MEDICINE MBA

MEDICINE

A medical doctor, especialized in intensive care, comes by your office to inquiry about fellowship programs in the US. She needs to find out intensive care programs specialized in “neurointensivism.”

She states that she is not interested in having any contact with patients: she only intends to conduct observation and research in american hospitals.

Medicine - Fellowship

Section III - Critical Care p.420

- Lists hospitals and medical schools with residency programs in critical care medicine - My advice for the medical doctor was to use this publication as a reference to contact institutions in the specialization and ask for the possibility of a fellow

Medicine

The other thing I could have done was to introduce the advisee to the new 2000 CDROM of the “Graduate Medical Education Directory”

We also had folders donated by former advisees on residency and fellowship programs in the US, which served as a model to show the difference on programs

Had it not been for internet aid, my session with the advisee would have ended here

However,....

Fellowships

There is a link to emergency medicine fellows

I continued talking to the advisee and found out that she was also interested in emergency care. Also, she explained to me that critical care medicine has recently been divided into critical care general, critical care cardiology, and “neurointensivism.” I found out through a search engine that “neurointensivism” is neurointensive care

Search engine: www.metacrawler.comSearch: “neurointensive”

Both the search engine and Freida on line complemented the information requested and our medical doctor was very pleased with the findings. Hurahhh!

MBA

A Brazilian consultant, who has worked for Arthur Anderson and Ernest Young, intends to pursue an MBA program in the US with concentration on finance. He is starting the process 18 months in advance, and he would like to be informed about the universities, rankings, and possible financial aid, although he states that he can finance his studies. He would also like to know about test prep materials for the GMAT.

The advisee states that in order to have a better chance of employment in the companies he worked for, he would need to get into a top twenty MBA program according to Business Week or US News. He borrows the following books from us:

MBA Handouts

We give specific handouts on MBA admission process, what makes a good MBA candidate, MBA sites in the internet, etc.

We have study plans (essays) donated by former advisees that have been admitted into an MBA program in the US. New advisees are allowed to consult these essays as a model.

We have videotaped two presentations of students accepted into Stanford, Darden, and one presentation from the funding institute in Brazil, Fundação Estudar. Advisees can borrow both presentations to find out the path taken by these students to get accepted into an MBA program.

Here comes the internet....www.fulbright.org.br

My advising session would have ended here if it weren’t for the internet...

The first thing we do at the office is to guide the advisees to our technology center, which opens at our homepage:

Links to US universities’ homepages, fields of study in business, testing, and related institutions

www.estudar.org.br

Besides the financing information given by this institution to Brazilians, they list several good sites of financial information for the MBA program

Brazilians MBA students abroad homepage. Search by university for contact info of Brazilian alumni or Brazilian students in the US.
