Much indignation is professed by theDemocratic parish committee at an ex-posure of ballot box stmuling, and themourbon press-which vouchsafed not a

word at the disgraceful stuffing done inthe thirteenth and lourteenth wards at tiherecent election for a member of the House-are preaching and fnumilng about the,purity of elections. This alleget stuffing

wans done at thti recment primlary electionin Algiers (fifteenth ward) held Saturdayweek. Heon. E. Quinti and one P. Hiea-nessey charge each other with the act.This ward is very largely Republican,and as it is imnpossiblo for a Democrat tobe elected there by a fair election, Mr.

llilllln's guilt can be pre-supposed. Aconmmittee of five has been appointedfront the parish conmmittee to investigatethe affair and some flattering (I) disclos-ures are expected.

The Board of levee conlnlissioners forthe fourth levee district has levied anextra tax of five mills on the dollar uponall taxable property in the district. ILis thought by the State Engineers thateven this amount will not cover all ne-cessary expenses, aud without the gen-eral government colnes to our aid, thesugar parishes will be left to the mercyof another rise of the great nationalhighway, the Mississippi river.

The most disastrous fire which has oc-curred here since the war, took place onSunday morning. In the block wherethe old standing firm of E. J. Hart doesbusiness, $250,000 worth of property waslaid in ashes. S. Hernsheim & Co.'stobacco house loses over $100,000 by thecatastrophe, which is fully covered byinsurance; the other losses are: JohnNelson & Co., $50,000, Harrison & Betti-son, about $5000. J. B. Camors, $10,000,and J. G. Pascal & Co. $6000. Thebuildings, which belonged to the Poy-dras Orphan Asylum, are a total wreck.At this time it is impossible to fuilly esti-inmate the loss. The foreign insurance

companies hold most of the risks.The Pickwick club have now under

,consideration plans for their new build-ing which will shortly be erected at thecorner of Carondelet and Canal streets.It will extend sixty-four feet on Canal,

* and one hundred and thirty feet on Car-ondelet, and will be about ninety feet
