LITHUANIAN TELEVISION

Television came into life of lithuaninas only in April of 1957, when TV center in Vilnius was activated. The first shown programme was a movie “Tėviškėje” (Homeland). At that time there were about 30 TV’s in Lithuania, but til the end of year the number grew to 1500.

During 1958-1961 Television network expanded to other Lithuanian cities. In 1961 web of television covered area, which was 60% of the Lithuanian population.

People were able to observe welcoming ceremony of astronaut J. Gagarin.

Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre owns the highest building in the country: the Vilnius Television Tower (326.5 m). Facilities mounted inside and outside the TV Tower transmit radio and TV signals and data for provision of the Internet and other services.

The TV tower was built in 6 years (1974-1980). And lately it became a place of achieving personal records; it constantly attracts the attention of citizens of Vilnius and guests of the city for implementation of various projects.

In 1973 was presented first small- size portable, black & white video, 16 cm diagonal TV named „Šilelis”. Since 1978 “Šilelis” started producing coloured video TV’s. Into foreign countries “Šilelis” was exported titeled “Schiljalis” .

Lithuanian channels offer a variety of programmes for people of all ages including entertainment, documentries, series, animation, projects, talk shows .
