Little Monster, Big Monster: a Cross-Level Collaboration

WHAT is this project?In this project, one group of students provides the 2D ‘inspiration’ for another group of students to create 3D monsters from.
This project works well between different grade levels or schools.
Little Monsters……(not the children)
Younger students (in our case pre-k) draw monsters using geometric shapes.
They are told they are ‘helping’ the high school students (because they didn’t have any ideas) but they don’t know how their drawings will be used...
Big Monsters….. (maybe the children ;) )
Receive monsters1. Students receive monsters at random to analyze and recreate**
2. Students must keep with the student’s design and color scheme, but must also consider the construction aspects of their creatures.
Making Monsters3. Based off of their drawing, and any notes the have made, students begin to construct monsters.
4. Once dry, students use acrylic paints to add color to their creations!

the monsters!
But Beware!Younger students aren’t always as careful with artwork as they should be.
The teacher of the younger group should talk to them about how to handle artwork and how to politely receive work before the older students arrive.
Older students should be warned ahead of time that things may break, but can be repaired. ALWAYS HAVE A REPAIR PLAN READY!
Also, prepare the older students for being with the younger students if they are helping you deliver monsters. High school students are much bigger, and if there are many of them, they intimidate the littles.
Big surprise!
After receiving their monsters…..The Pre-K students had an idea…
They asked if the high school students could do a really fast alien drawing.
Pre-k students will take the drawings and create their own version of the high school students’ aliens to gift to them as a surprise!
The high school students have completed their drawings, but they have no idea what pre-k is doing!
