Living Healthy, Loving Fully:
The Practice of Holy Lingering
There are some phrases people use in a conversation with me that cause me to bristle. It’s usually because it hits too close to home
or because the phrase is so overused, I’m tired of hearing them. One such phrase is “slowing down.” As soon as I hear it, I feel my shoulders get tense and my heart beat faster. Since moving here, all I hear, observe and experience is the fast pace of Northern Virginia. Jeff and I are fighting hard for slow. So when I’m encouraged by someone with “you need to slow down,” it makes me want to scream: “I’m trying here, don’t ya know!” (My Minnesotan comes out when I’m under distress!)
At the Adult Formation learning event on January 9, Dr. Arnold expressed the same message of the need to slow down but in a different way…a way which resonated more deeply with me and actually drew me in rather than repulsed me away. He encouraged us to practice the art of holy lingering.
Gordon McDonald writes in his book A Resilient Life, “Holy lingering is when no one is in a hurry. There’s no pressure to make something happen. People care about each other. No one is in a hurry to get somewhere else. They just linger.” Dr. Arnold’s encouragement was that in order for the church to be missional today, we need to learn and practice the art of holy lingering…to be present in the moment and to not have an agenda. And this may mean sitting under a tree and being still. Or not looking past someone when you are having a conversation.
This is a tall order in our overloaded NOVA lifestyle. You’re probably thinking, “Where can I possibly even fit holy lingering in! I have no time!” The beauty though is that lingering is not just one more thing we have to do. It’s how we can just be.
Holy lingering is an important step in truly being missional. In prayer, we have the opportunity to listen to God as He helps define what lingering looks like for each of us.
For me, today, it means walking more slowly. So if you see me walking fast in the hallway, gently remind me to linger!
I’d like to hear what the Lord teaches you about the art and practice of holy lingering. Please share your story with me at Stacey.crosson@poplc.org.

First Communion Class
Sundays, February 21, 28 and March 6, 2:30pm Room 27 Prince of Peace offers the First Communion Class series several times during the year so that younger children can benefit from the powerful resources that Jesus provides in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The class is designed for children from 3rd through 6th grade. Because our classes are designed for children and their parents, the students are always accompanied by at least one parent. It is important that children and a parent attend all three classes in the series. We can accommodate 10 children in a class with their parents. If we have more than 10 students, we plan to offer an additional class later in the year so that we can accommodate everyone. joen.schultz@poplc.org

Attention ALL Women!
For a variety of reasons, most of our women at Prince of Peace are unable to join us on Wednesday mornings so we are making plans to COME TO YOU!
In the coming weeks, we will live stream and post our opening devotion time from 9:30-10:00 a.m. so you can worship with us and hear the weekly message and ministry announcements.
We will also post the message on the WoW Wednesday Morning Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Facebook page (please “friend us!”) and on the WoW page of the PoP website at http://www.poplc.org/wowmessage. Through these efforts, we hope to encourage more women within PoP and the surrounding community to connect with the life-changing Word of God.

Faith Stories
Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming His people for himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to Him. You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the http://popfaithstories.wordpress.com, or by sending an e-mail to tiffany.sears@poplc.org.
