THEME: WORLD OF STORIES

TOPIC : THE TWINS

Theme: World of StoriesTopic: The TwinsContent Standard: 1.1, 1.3Learning Standards: 1.1.2, 1.1.4, 1.3.1 (c)Time : 60 minutesEMK : Thinking skills, Multiple IntelligencesTeaching Aids: Task sheets, audio clip

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

i) discuss the characteristics, similarities and differences of

their physical featuresii) listen to the story from the audio clipiii) predict what happens in the next part of the story

Activities:1. Pupils discuss about a picture of two boys(twins)2. Pupils talk about the twins in the picture and discuss their characteristics, similarities and differences. Eg: height, facial features3. Pupils listen to the story from audio clip twice.

4. Pupils listen to the part 1 of the story and teacher pauses the audio clip.5. Pupils complete a table in task sheet 1.6. Compare answers in pairs.7. Pupils talk about the similarities and differences between the twins.8. Pupils listen to part 2 of the story and predict what Rory is planning to do with the money given to him by his grandmother. (Teacher gives some cue questions )

9. Teacher tells them to wait for the next lesson to know what happens next.

By the end of the lesson, pupils would be able to:(i) read and understand phrases and sentences fromlinear text and answer questions orally;

(ii) read and demonstrate understanding of text bypredicting outcomes with guidance;

(iii) read for information and enjoyment with guidance thestory given and complete a table showing cause andeffects relationship.

Steps:Pre-reading1. Lead pupils to talk about Rory and Callum (the main characters in the story TheTwins they heard in the previous lesson).

Cue Questions: Who are Rory and Callum?Are they identical twins?How are they different?What do you think Callum is up to after getting theRM1.00 from his grandmother?

2. Tell pupils that they are going to find out more about Rory and Callum today.

While-reading3. Project the first excerpt from the story on Power point slide using the LCD onto a screen.4. Pupils read silently. Teacher then reads the excerpt aloud, emphasizing ondetails that will lead pupils to the prediction.

5. Pupils are encouraged to make relevant prediction based on information fromthe excerpt (Powerpoint slides)6. Repeat step 3 to 5 for the other excerpts. (Excerpt 2 – 7 – Powerpoint slides)7. Recap all important information before moving on.

Post-reading8. Pupils work in groups.9. Each group is given a task sheet.

10. Pupils are to discuss the outcomes of each situation in the table.11. Teacher facilitates from group to group.

12. One group will be selected to present their outcomes for one situation. Othersare encouraged to comment.13. Teacher facilitates the presentation.

Closing14. Lead a discussion on how each outcome would change the ending of the story.

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to write a:1. diary entry from the viewpoint of one of the main characters in the story ‘The Twins’ with correctpunctuation.

Time: 60 minutesTeaching Aids: Two diary excerpts, picture of the shoe incident,Callum’s complete diary entryEMK: Thinking Skills & Multiple IntelligencesMoral Value: Spending wisely

Activities :1. Show pupils two excerpts from Rory’s and Callum’s diary entries.2. Pupils guess which entry was written by which boy, and explain why.3. Explain to pupils what a diary is used for and what some of its main featuresnormally are (eg. has a date, written in the first person ie: ‘I’)

4. Pupils get into groups of 4 and each group is given a piece of mahjong paper. Theyare assigned to be either Rory or Callum and write a short diary entry, guided by thequestions and word prompts.

5. Pupils rearrange sentence parts and punctuate the sentences correctly. 6. Pupils get the information from the text to complete and substitute the pictures with the words given.
