The total investment volume associated with the structural funds and cohesion scheduled to Portugal for the period 1989 -2013 is
higher than the annual gross domestic product.
GDP per capita on a purchasing power parity basis rose from 51% of the EU average in 1985 to 78% in early 2002.
Between 1985 and 2010, the proportion of the working age population who completed secondary or higher education has almost doubled,
life expectancy, rose 5 years at birth and 3 at 65 years of age and rate of infant mortality, dropped from 15 to 3 deaths per thousand live births between 1986 and 2010.
