March 12, 2019The Cass County Board of Supervisors met at 9:00 a.m. with all members present:

Steve Baier, chair; Stephen Green, John Hartkopf, Mark O’Brien and Frank Waters. Agenda upon motion by Waters, 2nd by Green was approved. Minutes of February 28, 2019, upon motion by O’Brien, 2nd by Hartkopf were approved.

The Chair recessed the meeting and the Board proceeded with the hearing on the proposed Cass County budget for FY2019. Notice was published in all three official newspapers.

Recommendation of the Cass County Compensation Board for elected officer base salaries was received. Recommended compensation: “Auditor, Treasurer and Record-er $62,500, Sheriff $82,000, County Attorney $125,000 and supervisors $31,200 with an additional $1,000 for the acting chair.

Proposed county budget, including Secondary Roads IDOT budget, was consid-ered. No citizens presented arguments in favor of or against the budget. Engineer Charles Bechtold presented the IDOT budget. After a brief discussion: Motion by Waters, 2nd by O’Brien: to close hearing. Carried unanimously.

In reconvened session:County Engineer Charles Bechtold presented copies of the Secondary Roads Bud-

get for FY2020. Motion by Waters, 2nd by O’Brien: to adopt the FY2020 IDOT (Secondary Roads) expense budget (including construction program) as presented. Carried unanimously.

The Board considered the recommendation of the County Compensation Board. Motion by Green, 2nd by Hartkopf to reduce the increases for Auditor, Recorder and Treasurer so as to set the final compensation at $61,000 and to reduce the increases for all other elected officers by a like percentage; and to adopt Resolution No. 2019-004. Carried unanimously.

RESOLUTION NO. 2019-004 COMPENSATION SCHEDULE FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS FOR FISCAL YEAR 2020

WHEREAS, the Cass County Compensation Board meets annually to recommend a compensation schedule for elected officials for the fiscal year immediately follow-ing, in accordance with Iowa Code Chapters 331.905 and 331.907, and

WHEREAS, the Cass County Compensation Board met on November 27, 2018, and made the following recommended increases for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2019; the Auditor, Recorder and Treasurer to $62,500; the County Attorney to $125,000; the Sheriff to $82,000; and the Supervisors to $31,200; and

WHEREAS, the Board chooses to reduce the increase for Auditor, Recorder and Treasurer to set final compensation at $61,000 and reduce the increases for all other elected officers by a like percentage.

BE IT RESOLVED that the Cass County Board of Supervisors adopts said Bud-get and Certification of Taxes as published for fiscal year 2020.

The Cass County Committee on Aging reviewed activity of the organization. Six of the eight cities in the county now have active groups. Committee representatives thanked the county for its past and continuing support.

Wiota UMW Meeting HeldWiota United Methodist

Women met on March 13, 2019, with nine members and one guest present. The meeting opened by reciting the “Purpose.” Karen Berger read an article, “Practice the Presence of God.” Roll call was answered with a favorite way to relax.

Secretary Pat Ostrus read the minutes of the February meeting and they were approved as read. Treasurer Diane Denney gave the treasurer’s report and it was placed on file for audit.

Karen Berger gave the “Re-sponse” moment. She reported that the articles this month were focused on the 150th year of United Methodist Women and the history behind our organi-zation, including a timeline of United Methodist Women pre-decessor organizations.

Nova Wright read 2 Timothy 1:3-7 from the Prayer Calen-dar. Those to be remembered in our thoughts and prayers were named and joys shared.

Kathie Mailander gave a les-son based on “Happy Birthday, United Methodist Women” and introduced Judy Marnin, who presented a program about her trip to England and telling what she learned about John Wesley, who is regarded as the “Father of Methodism.”

Karen Berger gave the clos-ing prayer and adjourned the meeting with Micah 6:8. Kathie Mailander was hostess.
