Commissioned by Sarah Joslyn as a gift to the city of Omaha in memory of her late husband, George, the museum opened in 1931. The original building is considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the nation. The Scott Pavilion, a 58,000-square foot addition, opened in 1994. The expansion added seven galleries for modern and contemporary art and special exhibitions, as well as the Museum’s signature ConAgra Foods Atrium. In 2009, Joslyn completed a three-phase redevelopment of its campus that added the Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden, a Discovery Garden, flowing water features, enhanced entrances and drives, renovated and expanded parking, landscaped green spaces, rich granite pathways, an entrance plaza to welcome visitors, and important sculptures by nationally and internationally renowned artists. In May 2013, the Museum stopped charging general admission, again providing free access to the public as it had done from its opening until the mid-1960s.

Dedicated to excellence and celebrating art in all its variety, the museum maintains a collection of art historical significance. We invite you to explore the many galleries that contain collections ranging from antiquity to the present, with special emphasis on 19th- and 20th-century European and American art. Through its collections, exhibitions, and education programs, Joslyn seeks to foster appreciation and enjoyment of art for the benefit of a diverse audience.
