Commodore’s Message:

In the September BoatHouse meeting we discussed

the need to upgrade the teaching fleet. The boat that

was suggested as most practical for TSC was from

RS Sailing. The two boats from the RS line that

would best fit our needs are the RS Tera and RS

Zest. These boats cost about $3,500 and $4,000,

respectively. Further discussion and research will

follow. All boats in TSCs’ fleet are owned by LTEF.

At the September monthly Membership meeting a short business meeting was

called to discuss and vote on two issues brought before the Club. The first of

which was the need to make the Capri sail worthy. The Membership approved

a $1,000 transfer from the TSC general account and approved expenditure

reimbursement up to $2,000 by the BoatHouse Committee for the Capri. The

second issue was the need to upgrade the teaching fleet and funding of the

initial purchase. The Membership approved two transfers of $4,000 each to the

LTEF from TSCs’ general account and the BoatHouse account, respectively.

OU Sailing continued in September with limited participation. However, the

Sunfish were sailing actively with an open invitation to all Members who own a

Sunfish to participate. Hopefully, the weather will permit the Sunfish to sail in

October.

C.A.S.T. for Kids was another big success this year. Thanks to Les Cummings

and all the TSC volunteers, as well as, all the other volunteers, organizations

and partners who participated.

You won’t want to miss the October 20th Membership meeting when the TSC

Sailing Instructors will present a program to introduce us to the RS Sailing fleet

upgrade you’ve heard so much about. This is a major upgrade and move for

our Club into 21st Century sailing. The Instructors will explain the features that

make this boat so adapt to our kids teaching program and will hopefully have a

boat we can gaze upon for ourselves. Unfortunately “Jerry Lojka’s BVI Charter”

was again rescheduled. I promise you will be able to hear all about it in the No-

vember meeting.

We finished September with the Fall WaterFest. I’ll look for you on October

20th.

Program: “PLANNED FLEET UPGRADE”

Thunderbird Sailing Club has big plans to update its fleet of educational sail boats. Currently

we teach primarily with Sunfish and the Optimist and Vanguard Prams.

These boats have served us well, however, our old Sunfish are falling apart, the sails can't be

reefed, and they often overpower the kids in our classes. The prams are tough to manage once

capsized, much time is lost dumping out the water, and the kids become scared of pushing

their limits. Phil Moershel and our sailing instructors have been leading the research on find-

ing the best replacement options and have a few to share with the membership. Be sure to at-

tend and hear the plan they have in place to modernize our fleet.

Hiram Douglas Memorial Regatta A one day Regatta, Sunday,

November 4, 2018 A distance race, 10 - 18 miles

CLASSES: All boats 18 feet length on deck or greater are welcome. Other boats allowed at the discretion of the Regatta Chair; please inquire. Boats shall register in either Spinnaker, Cruising, or multi hull handicap fleets. The primary helmsman of a boat must be a current member of TSC, a rec-ognized sailing club or sailing association, or a CSSA member. RULES: The race will be governed by the Rules as defined in the 2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing, and CSSA Sailing Instructions with supplemental Local Appendix. TROPHIES: Trophies will be presented to 1st - 3rd in each fleet. The traveling Trophy will be present-ed to the Skipper and Crew of the boat with the lowest corrected time in the largest fleet. FACILITIES Ramp at Sailboat Point for centerboard and dagger-board boats and some fixed keel-boats. Ramps for fixed keelboats ½ mile west or 1 mile north of marina. Courtesy dock at the Boat-House.

Cooks shall register in either Bean or Non-Bean handicap pots with handicapping using the current TSC Sailing Hotsmouth Yardstick heat cor-rection factors. RULES: The winning chili will be voted on by the diners. Diners will be given tokens to cast their vote for their favorite. Chili with the most tokens wins.

TROPHIES: Trophies will be presented to best chilis. FACILITIES: Chili should be hot and ready for judging by 1600.

17th Annual CAST for Kids

A huge ‘thank you’ to all the TSC, LTEF, BOR, OKC-TRI, Navy Chiefs, Thunderbird State

Park volunteers and of course the CAST for Kids Foundation for supporting the 17th annual

fishing derby for children with disabilities! In addition we want to thank these donors as

well: BMI Systems, Rococo/Manhattan Restaurants, Legends Restaurant, OKC Downtown

Lion’s Club, Homeland Stores, Miles Associates, Country Corner Store, Alameda Market,

Little River Marina, A&B Rent-All, Arvest Bank, Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Hiland

Dairy, Dr. Camisa Stewart Cummings, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Canadian Valley Bait. A

special thank you to the Edmond Elks Lodge that donated $4,000 to the event again this

year, thanks to their donation, each child and fishing guide received terrific gifts at the

event. We also want to give a special thank you to Pam and her staff at the Alameda

Homeland Store that has all the food and supplies ready for us on Friday afternoon!

We had over 130 people attend including over 20 children and a like number of fish-

ing guides, boats and crew. Chef Roger Elliott along with sous chefs, Camisa Stewart, Cheri

Elliott, Ed Shoemaker, Lorrie Sylvester and all the great helpers served a delicious luncheon.

Greg Snyder once again did a great job as our emcee, introducing all the kids and

their fishing guides while encouraging the kids to share their fishing stories with everyone.

Even with a little rain, for the first time in 17 years, it could not dampen the excite-

ment of all those in attendance!

October Birthdays The Bottle Sling knot

The knot is begun by making a bight in a piece of rope and folding the bight back on itself to make two sepa-

rated loops that are mirror images of each other. Lay one loop on top of the other so that they overlap slight-

ly and create a cat's eye shaped hole above a triangular shaped hole between the two loops. Make a bird's

beak with your index and thumb and weave them down through the loop, up through the cat's eye and down

through the bottom loop, bunching the coils of rope against your fingers. Pinch the section of rope that was

the bottom of the triangle and flip the coils over the pinched section. The flip may take a little practice, but

the pinched section should become a short bight hanging off a circular shaped knot.

regattas and all club meetings. Be sure to get your new shirt while there is a wide selection of

sizes.

TSC Membership Renewals

It is that time of year again, Membership renewal. 2019 is almost here. The TSC membership

is from January 1 to December 31. I will be mailing out renewal notices beginning the first

week in November. It is more important than ever that you renew this year. The club has

committed to adding new boats for the kids sailing camp and boats that can be sailed by the

membership. This commitment has drained our funds therefore we need to replenish our cash

reserves. We also need new membership. If you know anyone with a sailboat or anyone inter-

ested in sailing, encourage them to join the club.

Fleet Captain: Racing Report

Racing News: As of the end of this last month, racing for our Wednesday even-

ing Commodore’s Cup races is finished for this sailing season. But, they will

continue for the next month on Sunday afternoons start with the Layton on Octo-

ber 14th and then will continue at 2pm in front of the BoatHouse on the 21st and

Capri 22.

Interested? Thunderbird Sailing Club is experimenting with a new Shared Boat program. For a few more

dollars than our basic membership, you get access to a good sailboat in good condition. We

launched this program with Shamrock, an O’Day 24, this year and have ten members who are

a part of the Shamrocker Team. We are considering adding a Capri 22, which is more of a race

boat to our Shared Boat Program. If there is enough interest, we will add the Capri to our

fleet. If you want more information or are interested in joining the Capri Group, please contact
