MAJOR PROJECT Portfolio development

FASHION TEXTILE LEVEL-6 2020

BY MAHEK MEHBOOB SHARIF

Research statement

My collection reflects my true personality and it shows I have always been underconfident because of the appearance of my hair. I believed having curly hair

was a drawback, and it made me feel unsure and hesitate about myself. I felt more comfort in straightening my hair and transforming them, then eventually I realized that my hair make me stand out and I need to own and be more optimistic towards myself and my hair. My collection is a depiction of my journey of being more self-

confident and comfortable with myself the way I am.

In my prints I will show my curls using movement of lines as a design element cause it symbolizes my emotional connection which depicts my confidence and

self –realization in my prints.

My photoshoot was prepared, and planned for before the outbreak of the current pandemic situation. This interruption halted my preparations for my clothing design photoshoot completely. However, my ideas for the shoot are

vividly explained in this slide. The photoshoot setup was framed in an outdoor domain, consisting of a pool surrounded by lush greenery and trees. the waves of the pool portray the wavy pattern used in my designs; delineating my theme

i.e. my overwhelmed waves of my hair. The patterns on the trees and the blends of colors in the picturesque setup all reflect onto my theme and

designs.

The ever changing landscapes of the region due to Covid-19 leaves everyone questioning their pre planned timelines. Similarly, during the

closure of campuses, and stores aiding educational practices, I was working remotely on my dissertation, communicating with my adviser through email and digital meetings, and creating my own schedule of

productivity outside the university. Amidst all this, i was unable to replicate my portfolio on a printed hardcopy, which otherwise i would

have presented with my resume. Likewise i was unable to create prototypes for my branding products or experiment physically with my

garments.

Limitations due to covid-19

This year has been a jump into an obstacle course. However my existing knowledge and extensive learnings throughout the year allowed me to creatively combine my graphic design skills with

imagination, vision and technological savvy to produce a large range of designs. It gave me an opportunity to view things, specially myself and my hair, in unique perspectives. It has enabled me to replicate

my thoughts, imagination and perceptions onto digital designs, further opening my mind to new ideas. The thought put into this

project would’ve have given an overwhelming result had i not been halted by the pandemic situation. Regardless I wish to pursue onto

completing my timeline once the situation is better.
