PEOPLE INVOLVED

12

Access team

Demand for ACCESSIBILITY is unlimited

13

Funding for ACCESSIBILITY is limited

14

ACCESSIBILITY is expensive

15

Problem 1

ACCESSIBILITY requires specialist knowledge

16

Problem 2

PEOPLE INVOLVED

17

17

ACCESSIBILITY is niche

18

Problem 3

Main questions1. cheaper? 2. easier?3. smarter?4. reach

a bigger audience?

5. more accessible?

19

---How to make it...

Economicalbut in a reasonableand responsible way

20

!

Idea 1 | Live subtitles

21

● Cloud Speech-to-Text - Google SR is a good tool for small NGO meetings

● Web Captioner - a web-based SR tool for low-budget conferences, NGO workshop

● BUT… not for official meetings and professional events

Cheap solutions can be very expensive

22

23

24

25

Idea 2 | Say no to unnecessary or pretended accessibility

Lunch menu printed in Braille or large print?

→ universal design - online version for everyone

Live audiodescription during a conference? Describing talking heads or the background of the presention?

Analyze the needs of the audience. For instance, asking about them through the registration form.

26

Idea 3 | Increase audience reach

27

Online streaming can increase audience reach by 10 or more times at a fraction of a cost

> x 5but you need to publicise it in advance

Idea 4 | Re-use for all distribution channels

Sign langugage interpreting - both for the venue and online streaming

under certain conditions

requires planning in advance

Live subtitling - displayed in the venue and re-used for online streaming

When the recording is published online or archived,

make sure it stays accessible. 28

For multilingual events that require interpreting, providing content accessibility, including live subtitling, is more cost-effective than providing just interpreting.

For large multilingual events (>100 participants) it can actually be cheaper.

It’s due to interpreting equipment costs and depends on whether you have equipment or need to rent it.

Idea 5 | Live interlingual subtitling can be a cost-effective substitute for interpreting

29

Idea 6 | Find/train access specialists with more universal competences

sign language interpreter that can interpret from/into Polish and a foreign language (for instance, English) or a foreign sign language

interlingual respeakers that can interpret from a foreign language

live linterlingual subtitlers that act both as interpreters, respeakers, correctors and technicians

30

accessibility needs to become easierand smarter...

31

!

What the industry needs to become smarter?

● new technologies and new workflows● training accessibility managers● norms and technical protocols

(ILSA project for live interlingual subtitling)

32

● finds out and analyzes the needs of the audience ● understands all access services and knows how to seamlessly combine

them when organizing the event● educates all the involved parties on what is necessary for access

provision to be successful and why● makes sures all the content stays accessible

when streamed online, re-distributed or archived

Our dream accessible manager

33

● makes sure the event and the access services have accessible promotion and information in advance

● makes sure there’s accessibile information throughout the event on what services are available and how to use them ○ for instance, remind the speakers to talk to the microphone (for

subtitling) or tell the audience where they can get headphones for adio description

● accommodate individual needs whenever possible

Our dream accessible manager

34

...but even once this dream is fullfilled...

35

!

23 billion PLNapprox. 5.3 billion EUR invested in accessibility over 7 years

36

...not only accessiblebut also sustainable...

37

accessibility to be sustainable, needs to become a part of our DNA
