Who am I ?

Biology graduate– Teach / have taught IS, Math, Biology, Computer

Start teaching at 1990– Served 5 schools, now at Ying Wa College DSS, Aided, PIS Band 1, 2, 3 … (bottom 10, band 4,5)

Value-added for recent ICT teaching : 8-9

Problems facing

Student side– Students not doing revision when back

home– Students are copying others’ work (HW)

several minutes before lesson (submission)– Too many content to know / memorize

especially for Senior form students Laziness of student ???

Problems facing

Teacher side (my side)– So many admin works at school– So many engagement outside– Repeated works

Trigger Point

Meet “Cisco Networking Academy” at 2004– First layer : auto-marking tools– Second layer : instructor in-person marking

Meet “Moodle” at 2005

Trigger Point

My thinking is– Homework Is not simply a “work” for student To let students to keep on his memory /

study of knowledge learnt “today” (at least) Need to be on students’ own effort

Trigger Point

My thinking is– Homework Otherwise, take up so many “precious” time

of teachers, but not cost-effective– Especially if works are not on students’

own effort– Punishing both

My solution

Change homework to auto-marking– MC– Fill in the blank– True & False– Matching

Too simple, by chance ?

My solution

Change some of the homework to auto-marking– MC– Fill in the blank– True & False– Matching– Multiple answer no hints for how many correct / incorrect

Allow multiple attempt, and recording the latest mark as record

Too simple, by chance ?

Moodle

Canvas/ VLE

Observation

Reduced the chance of works copying

Some students wants to be perfect

Benefit to teachers

Auto-marking, Unified gradebook

Benefit to teachers

Auto-marking, Unified gradebook

Can trace students’ works

Complimentary works

Of course understand that the types of questions by auto-marking is not perfect– So will have “document submission”
