Joyful Notes September 2016
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being
part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that
reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body
were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just
as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
-1 Corinthians 12:15-20
We’ve all done it. Stubbed a toe, or hurt our pinky finger, or had that dreaded hangnail. And we stand in awe
of how something so seemingly insignificant can affect our entire ability to function at 100%. We hobble, limp
and whine a bit because it HURTS!
God is one amazing engineer. Our bodies are more complex than the most sophisticated computer and God
has designed all the parts to work in harmony with each other with each part contributing to the whole.
Paul says it’s the same way with the body of Christ. The church is pretty complex too. Yet when working in
harmony with each member contributing his or her part to the whole, the church can do amazing things! But one
small conflict or pain, or members not contributing to the whole, can throw the whole body out-of-whack.
It’s hard to believe this glorious summer is almost over. Students are heading back to school. People will
soon be winterizing their campers and closing their pools. The fall “routine” will soon be in place again.
Ministries in the church that have been on summer hiatus will be starting again. Choir, Sunday school,
children’s worship, Thirsty Thursday and Play Day just to name a few. But those programs will only work if the
body functions as a whole, with each member contributing to the whole body. Are you serving in ministry? Are
you showing up for church? Are you contributing your part to the whole? The only way it’s going to work in
harmony is if we ALL do our part to help ensure success.
See You Sunday.
Your Friend and Pastor, Sean

Dear Faith Community: Gary and Joan Melvin have given me permissions to include their transfer of membership request in our newsletter. Gary, Joan and family have been part of the heart of MUMC for many years. While we are sad to see them go, we wish them nothing but the best as they begin this new chapter of their lives. -Pastor Sean August 21, 2016 Dear Pastor Sean and the Martin Congregation Since we have moved to Kalamazoo, we would like to transfer our membership to the Westwood United Methodist Church located five minutes from our new home. We feel it is important to develop a church family close to our home so when we are unable to drive we will have a church relationship in our neighborhood. We have been members of the Martin United Methodist Church for over 40 years and have enjoyed serving the Lord in various ministries there. We have appreciated all the love, support and prayers offered for Greg, his family, and for us over our lifetime as Gary’s parents were married in the MUMC in 1939. We have developed many close relationships by participating in small groups, working on committees, helping on dinners, and especially during our time serving as Stephen Minister Leaders. We have been blessed by so many friends who mean the
world to us. It is with sadness that we make this decision as we love Pastor Sean, the Martin church and the members, but feel this is a good choice for us now to make this move at this time. We will return for many special occasions and will continue to support the church with our resources and prayers for the Martin UMC people and the ministries of the church. Blessings, Joan & Gary Melvin UNITED METHODIST CAMPS
