About our Maths activities

Mental Maths starters

Choose one of the challenges to complete. These should be quick starters lasting about 5 minutes.

Activities

We have included some different activities for each day. You can choose whether you would like to do the ‘Activity Time’ or the

Maths No Problem workbook pages if they have not already been completed.

We are now using Maths No Problem Book 2.

Monday Starter

Monday 15th June

L.O – To tell the time to the hour.

• I can recognise the minute hand on an analogue clock.

• I can recognise the hour hand on an analogue clock.

• I know the hour hand needs to be on the 12 for o’clock.

What does the blue hand show?What does the red hand show?

The minute hand is pointing to 12. This means o’clock.The hour hand is pointing to 8.The time is 8 o’clock.

What are the missing times?

Activity Time!Make your own clock

Have a go at making your own paper clock to practise telling the time.

You can use a plate or a circle of paper.

Add the number 1-12 around the edge.

Cut two hands out of paper. Remember the minute hand needs to be shorter.

To attach your clock hands you could use a split pin or a paper clip to allow the hands to move.

Tuesday Starter

Tuesday 16th June

L.O – To tell the time to the half hour.

• I know the minute hand needs to be on the six for half past.

• I can tell the time to half past.

Activity Time!Tell the time throughout the day. Have an adult ask you what the time is throughout the day usingan analogue clock. Focus on the o’clock and half past times.

For a trickier challenge can you recognise quarter past and quarter to?

Look at the dots around the edge of this clock. What do you think they show?

Wednesday Starter

Wednesday 17th June

L.O – To be able to sequence events in order of time and to use the terms 'next,' 'before' and 'after' to describe the order of events.

• I can tell the time to the hour.

• I can tell the time to half past.

• I can use the language next, before and after to order events.

Activity Time!Order some of the events in your day. These could be – waking up

having breakfast doing school workhaving lunchplayinghaving dinnergetting ready for bedgoing to bed.

Choose some of these to order. Draw some pictures to show this and write some sentences including the language ‘next’, ‘before’ and ‘after’.

L.O – To estimate an amount of time using seconds, minutes and hours.

• I can think of something that lasts an hour

Discuss this questions:Would a maths lesson take longer than singing a song?

Activity Time!Estimate how long these activities would take.

Estimate how long these activities would take. Remember to use the words ‘seconds’, ‘minutes’ and ‘hours’ in your answer. You could time one of these activities using a stopwatch to see if you were right.

1. Writing your name 3 times.

2. Watching a film.

3. Reading a story book.

4. To get ready for bed.

As an extra challenge Think of two activities that would take about 10 seconds. E.g 5 star jumps. Write these down then time yourself to see if you are right.
