MEDICAL DEPARTMENT, INDIA.

In answer to Dr. Lush, Lord G. HAMILTON said,-TheGovernment of India have for some time past had the wholequestion of the Army Medical Service in India under theirconsideration, but they have not communicated any con-clusions. I am not, therefore, in a position to be able tostate what modifications may be proposed, or the reasonsfor them.

Mr. DALRYMPLE asked the Secretary of State for the HomeDepartment if his attention has been called to a memorialsigned by 900 medical practitioners, published in a recentnumber of THE LANCET, setting forth the evils resulting intheir opinion, especially to women, from the purchase underthe guise of necessaries of spirituous liquors from licensedgrocers. And, whether he will bring that memorial underthe notice of the Commission about to take evidence on thatsubject.Mr. Secretary CROSS.-Mr. Speaker,-My attention has

not been called to this memorial except by the question ofmy hon. friend. I made inquiries this morning upon thematter, but did not find that any memorial has been pre-sented to the Secretary of State upon the subject. Myright hon. friend the Lord Advocate is about-I believe inthe course of next week-to appoint these commissioners,and any memorial that may come either to him or to me Iwill take care to forward to them. Aftervisiting the wards or amusing themselves in the gardenwith lawn tennis, &c., they proceeded to an excellentluncheon. The fine weather added considerably to the en-joyment of those present.

BRADFORD MEDICO-CHIRURGICAL SOCIETY.—ThisSociety has just terminated a very successful session, andheld its fifteenth annual meeting. The membership nowincludes a large majority of Bradford practitioners, andmany of those from the populous districts surrounding thetown. During the past session the committee concluded anarrangement with the Board of the Bradford Infirmary, bywhich the Society finds a permanent home within the wallsof that institution, obtains the use of a large and increasinglyuseful medical library, and secures facilities for the prosecu.tion of pathology, and the formation of a museum. TheSociety has to deplore the loss of its president for the year,J. D. Lawrie, M.R.C.S., &c., who died suddenly on the IstJanuary, 1877.
