LORD, OPEN MY HEART!
L ent is about restoring our proper perspective toward God. It is a time for sacrifice and
self denial, a time for prayer and forgiveness, a time for spring-cleaning of the soul. This
year at my parish, we are approaching Lent with the theme: “Changing our hearts.” We
are doing a beautiful “call to worship” each week with a sung “Lord, have mercy” centering
around the change of heart. I also wrote a new song called “Change Our Hearts, O God”
which will be introduced at this year’s National Pastoral Music Convention in Saint Louis.
Jesus spent much of His time here on earth teaching people about Himself, about His Father,
about themselves, and about the plan of salvation that was about to come to completion in
Him through His suffering. Perhaps our hearts would change if we all took a moment each day in Lent to
learn something from our Savior. May our eyes be on the cross as we reach out in service and love throughout
the season of Lent and beyond. Lent calls us to put aside the many things that occupy our days and focus on
the one necessary thing - our relationship with Jesus. Perhaps we might confront the presence of sin in our
lives so that we can also appreciate the availability of God’s mercy, mercy which was made manifest in
Christ’s death on the cross for our sakes.
So we’ve begun. Lent is underway and we journey through these 40 days with hope. In our hearts we pray,
“Let this be the year, Lord, when I change my heart and return to you.” May we gather together all those
secret sins that weigh so heavily on our shoulders, then bundle them up and turn them over to God. Jesus,
Savior of my soul, you came long ago to pay for our sins. During this Lent, help us look within to change our
hearts and see how much we need you. May we embrace solitude and silence, attending to God’s presence, as
we now take a journey of the heart towards Holy Week where we can meet God.
As we approach Easter, consider the possible use of a song I wrote called “No More Tears.” I
had the honor to write this song for a wonderful person who mentored me into my music
vocation. My childhood parish organist “Florence Kowalski” offered me the opportunity to play
in church when I was in the 8th grade. Though she never wanted to take credit where credit was
due, she inspired me to want to become a pastoral musician. Florence died April 29, 2011. It
was then I decided to write an Easter song in her memory, “No More Tears.” Many years have passed since I
was in the eighth grade, but I still hear my mother waking me at 6:00 in the morning saying ‘Mrs. Kowalski
called and wants you to play for the 8:00 am Mass.’ I will forever smile from that honor.
Let us continue to celebrate what God has done as we declare our faith and trust in the Risen Lord. Jesus is
our solid rock…our firm foundation….He’s our cornerstone….Let’s raise our voices and lift up our song once
again to our Lord.
