Methanol from co2

introduction

Methanol is also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits.

It is a chemical with the formula CH3OH.

Methanol is the simplest alcohol, and is a light, volatile, colour less, flammable liquid with a distinctive odour very similar to that of ethanol (drinking alcohol).

Methanol is highly toxic and unfit for consumption.

At room temperature, it is a polar liquid.

It is used as an antifreeze, solvent, fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol. It is also used for producing biodiesel via transesterification reaction.

Methanol production

Methanol synthesis

CO + 2 H2 ↔ CH3OH [1]

CO2+3H2 ↔ CH3OH

Water-Gas Shift reaction

CO + H2O ↔ CO2 + H2 [2]

Methanol has been generated directly from carbon dioxide in solution using copper oxide (CuO) nano rods coated by cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and energy from sunlight.

PROCESS TECHNOLOGIES

METHANOL STREAM REFORMING PROCESS:

methanol is produced from natural gas using two step reforming process followed by low pressure synthesis.

METHANOL AUTO THERMAL REFORMING (ATR) PROCESS(Lisensor : holder-topse)

process consists of auto thermal reforming of natural gas followed by methanol synthesis in a straight-tubed reactor.

KELLOG BROWN AND ROOT Inc:

methanol is produced from hydro carbon feed stock with application of high pressure technology using BASF low pressure synthesis catalyst.

Process technologies

LURGI OIL-GAS CHEMIE GmbH:

methanol is produced from natural gas using combined reforming and low pressure methanol synthesis.

SYNERIC LOW PRESSURE METHANOL PROCESS:

methanol is produced by low pressure process using copper based catalyst.

ICI PROCESS:

It is a low pressure technology process using catalyst copper/zinc oxide/alumina composition of exceptional activity and selectivity of methanol.
