UCCMGAwarmlycongratulatesProfessorMaryHorgan,Dean,SchoolofMedicineassheiselectedasPresidentDesignateoftheRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansofIreland.

ProfessorHorganwillbecomethe142ndPresidentoftheRCPIinOctober2017andwillserveathreeyearterm.ItisalsoanewerafortheRCPIwithProfessorMaryHorganelectedthefirstwomanPresidentDesignateinits360yearhistory.

ProfessorHorganhasmadeenormouscontributionstotheRCPIsinceshefirstbecameinvolvedin1999.AsassociateDeanofBasicSpecialistTrainingshetooktheleadroleinthedevelopmentandtrainingofpostgraduatedoctorsandcurrentlyisamemberoftheCouncilandtheDirectorofDevelopmentandPlanning.

SheiscommittedtoensuringthattheRCPIcontinuetotraindoctorstoprovideworldclassmedicalcare.ProfessorHorganhassaid,“ItisagreathonourtobeelectedPresidentDesignateandIwanttothanktheMembersandFellowsofthisgreatCollegefortheirsupport.Ilookforwardtoworkingontheirbehalfintheyearsahead.“Irelandisrecognisedgloballyforthehighqualityofitsmedicalgraduatesandtrainees.Iamcommittedtoensuringthatwecontinuetotrainourdoctorstoprovideworldclassmedicalcareandtoprovideleadershipinourhealthserviceinthesechallengingtimes.”

TheCollegeofMedicineandHealthtookamajorstepintrulyachievinginterdisciplinaryeducationin2016withthecompletionofanadvancedresearchmethodsmoduleforMastersstudents.Fifty-fivestudentsacrossMastersprogrammeswithintheCollegeundertookthefirstinterdisciplinaryresearchmoduleforhealthcareprofessionals(MH6014).ThemodulewasdevelopedcollaborativelybyaninnovativeteamofacademicsfromtheSchoolsofNursing&Midwifery,Medicine,Dentistry,OccupationalSciences,Speech&HearingSciences,Pharmacy,DepartmentofEpidemiologyandPublicHealthwithsupportfromlibraryandlearningtechnologypersonnel.Thisblendedlearningmodulerepresentsagenuineopportunityforadvancinginterdisciplinaryhealtheducation.TheSchoolofNursing&Midwiferywereproudtoleadthiscollaborativeprogramme,drawingontheconsiderabledepthofexperienceandtalentwithinthecollegeasawhole.Leadingtheinitiative,DrElaineLehane,believesthatthisapproachwillprovetobeavaluabletemplateforfutureprogrammes.ItisafirstforboththeCollegeofMedicineandHealthandtheSchoolofNursingandMidwifery.Assuchitisawonderfulexampleofcollaborativeteamworkinplanninganddeliveringaneducationalprogrammetoadiverseinterdisciplinarycohortofstudents.

TheBritish&IrishLionsannouncedonWednesday,January18,threemajorappointmentsforthe2017tourtoNewZealand,HeadAnalystRhodriBown,HeadofMedicalEannaFalveyandHeadofStrength&ConditioningPaulStridgeonwillsupportheadcoachWarrenGatlandandhiscoachingteamonthe10-matchtour.

ThetriowilljoinupwiththeLionsaftertheRBS6Nations,andWarrenGatlandsaid:“Rhodri(Bown),Paul(Stridgeon)andEanna(Falvey)havealotofLionsexperience,includingbeingpartofawinningteamin2013andtheyknowwhatisrequiredforustobesuccessfulinNewZealand.TheywillbringawealthofknowledgeandskilltotheirrolesandIknowtheywillfitwellintotheenvironmentwearetryingtocreate.”

DirectorofSportsMedicineattheSportsSurgeryClinic,DublinandSeniorLecturerinSports&ExerciseMedicine,UniversityCollegeCork,DrEannaFalveyhasbeeninvolvedinthemedicalcareofeliteathletesformorethan15years,workinginrugby,football,boxingandAustralianRulesfootball.

PartofthemedicalteaminAustraliain2013,hewasteamdoctortotheIrelandrugbyteamfrom2009to2015anddoctorwithMunsterRugbyforfouryearsfrom2003to2007.

DrFalveywastheIrishAmateurBoxingAssociationhighperformanceunitphysicianfrom2009to2015duringaperiodofunrivalledsuccessforIrishboxing,maintainingalinktohisownsportingpastwherehewasNationalAmateurHeavyweightandSuperHeavyweightboxingchampion,representingIrelandatthe2001AIBAWorldSeniorBoxingChampionships.HeisamemberoftheWorldRugbyConcussionworkinggroup.

Senior Lecturer in Sports & Exercise Medicine, UCC, Dr Eanna Falvey, announced as Head of Medical for the British & Irish Lions 2017 Tour.

ProfessorBarryO’ReillyisaConsultantinObstetricsandGynaecology,whograduatedfromRCSIin1991andlatermovedtoLondontocommencespecialistregistrartrainingbasedinGuy’sandSt.Thomas’hospitals.HewasawardedaresearchfellowshiptostudyATPreceptorsinoveractivebladderwhichleadtotheawardofMDin2000.OncompletionofspecialtytraininghemovedtoMelbourne,AustraliatoundertakesubspecialtytraininginUrogynaecologyandPelvicFloorReconstructiveSurgery.BarrywasappointedConsultantandSeniorLecturerattheMercyHospitalforWomenandUniversityofMelbournein2003.HereturnedtotakeupaconsultantpostinCorkin2004andhassetuptheCentreforUrogynaecologyatCUMH.HefoundedtheContinenceFoundationofIrelandtoimprovemultidisciplinarycareandtoencourageclosercollaborationbetweenhealthcareprovidersandindustry.Barryhaspreviouslysatonthepublicrelations,scientificandeducationcommitteesandiscurrentchairofthee-learningcommitteeoftheInternationalUrogynaecologyAssociation.HeisontheexecutiveboardoftheEuropeanUrogynaecologyAssociationandisoneditorialandreviewboardsofseveralob/gynandUrogynaecologyjournals.HehasakeeninterestinminimallyinvasiveandroboticsurgeryandperformedthefirstroboticgynecologicalprocedureintheBritishIsles.

MGA LECTURE SERIESOnSeptember22nd2016theMedicalGraduatesAssociationhosted-Working in the US: Career Advice for the Curious Corkonian.ThespeakerswererecentUCCMedicalGraduates(2013)DrMattWiepkingandDrHelenO’Connell.MattandHelenarecurrentlyinresidencyprogrammesintheUS.TheeventwashugelyattendedbycurrentMedicalstudentsandofgreatvaluetothestudents.MattandHelenhadveryusefulinsightsandexperiencesinregardstosecuringtrainingintheUS.Thiswasalargelyinformalsessionwhichhadplentyofopportunityforquestionsanddiscussion.WeintheMGAandtheSchoolofMedicine,wishtothankMattandHelenformakingthehugecommitmentintravellingfromtheUStogivebacktotheSchoolandcurrentstudents.

Helen is an Irish graduate of the UCC 5 year medical programme (2013). She is currently a third year resident in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Toledo, Ohio.

Matt is a graduate of the UCC GEM programme (2013). A Californian with Irish roots, he is currently a third year and chief resident in Emergency Medicine at the University of Toledo, Ohio.

THAILANDProfessorMaryHorgan,Dean,SchoolofMedicineandMrGearoidMcCarthy,UCCASEANDevelopmentManager,recentlyvisitedThailandtodiscusscollaborationwiththeFacultyofMedicineSirirajHospital,MahidolUniversity,specificallydiscussingstudentelectiveexchanges.

ProfessorHorganandMrMcCarthywerehostedbytheDeanofMedicine,ProfessorPrasitWatanapa.SirirajHospitalistheoldestandlargesthospitalinThailand.Withacapacityofmorethan2,000bedsandmorethanonemillionoutpatientvisitsperyear,SirirajisoneofthebiggestandbusiestmedicalcentresinSoutheastAsia.

Summer2017willseethefirstexchangeagreementwithMahidolUniversity.OurUCCmedicalstudentslookforwardtothewonderfulexperienceahead.

DeanoftheSchool,ProfessorMaryHorgan,welcomedthelargenumberofprize-winners,theirfamiliesandfriendsandSchoolofMedicinecolleaguestotheevent,whichisaspecialdayintheSchoolofMedicinecalendar.

ProfessorHorganacknowledgedtherecentlyannouncedmajorinvestmentfromtheEuropeanInvestmentBank,whichwillbeofsignificantbenefitformedicalstudentsinthefuture.Asubstantialamount,c.¤12misring-fencedforaclinicalmedicalschoolontheCorkUniversityHospitalcampus.Also¤10mhasbeenallocatedtotheSouth/South-WestHospitalGroupforadditionaleducational,researchandinnovationatclinicalsitesinWaterford,ClonmelandKerry.ProfessorHorganacknowledgedthecommitmentandcontributionofmedicalcolleaguesinadvancingtheseprojects.

TheSchoolofMedicineisgratefulforallthosefamilies,friendsandbenefactorswhosupportPrizesinhonourofpastgraduatesoftheUniversity.

ThisyeartheDrFionnualaQuigleyMedalwaspresentedforthefirsttimeandtheDeanintroducedProfessorMichaelMolloytogivethecitationforthisaward.ProfessorMolloyoutlinedDrQuigley’sextensivecareerinmedicineandSportsMedicineinparticular.AswellasbeingabusypractitionerDrQuigleywasteamdoctortothenationalladiesfootballteamandgaveofhertimetomanyGAAandtennisevents.DrQuigleywasinstrumentalinbringingtheMMedSc(SportandExerciseMedicine)programmetoUCCwhichcontinuestothepresentday.ProfessorMolloysaidthatDrQuigley“dedicatedherlifetomedicine”anditisfittingnowthatanawardispresentedinhername.

TheannualNewHorizonsResearchConferencerecentlytookplaceintheWesternGatewayBuilding,UCC.TheconferenceshowcasedthediverserangeoftranslationalresearchfromPostgraduateResearch,Post-DoctoralResearchandClinicalResearch.

Thedaywasdividedinto3sessions.Eachsessionencompassedastimulatingmixtureoforalpresentationsandlecturesbyprominentclinicianscientistsandacademicstaff.Therewasalsoamoderatedpostersessionwith94posters.

TheconferenceconcludedwithaPrize-givingceremony,withawardsbeingdistributedforthebestpostersandoverallprizeforthebestoralpresentation.TheposterprizeswereawardedtoRachelFurlong,SchoolofBiochemistryandCellBiology,MelissaHänni,DepartmentofAnatomyandNeuroscienceDepartment,andAshleySullivan,APCMicrobiomeInstitute.TheOralPrizewasawardedtoLouiseDaly,SchoolofFoodandNutritionalSciences.

Diploma in Military Medical Care Conferring 2017TheConferringCeremonyfortheDiplomainMilitaryMedicalCarerecentlytookplaceintheAulaMaxima,UCC.Thegraduates,allservingmembersofDefenceForcesIreland,completedmodulesinEmergencyMedicalTechnician,MedicalPracticesEnhancementandMilitaryHealthcarePractice.TheprogrammewasofferedinconjunctionwithDefenceForcesIrelandandtheAcademyofEmergencyCare,EmergencyMedicineDepartment,CUH.Intotal24studentsreceivedtheirparchments.

TheOutstandingGraduateoftheYearawardwaspresentedtoPaulMellamphy.Paulconscientiouslyappliedhimselfanddisplayedcharacteristicswhichwereacredittohimself,hisfamilyandDefenceForcesIreland.Congratulationstoallrecipients!

TheMGAweredelightedtolearnoftheaccomplishmentsofourgraduatesoftheearly1970s–ProfessorCillianTwomeyandProfessorDavisCoakleyonbeingawardedtheIGSPresidentialMedalbythePresidentoftheIrishGeronotologicalSociety,MoFlynnattheIGS64thAnnual&ScientificMeeting2016heldintheMaltonHotel,KillarneyonSeptember30,2016.Thetitlefortheeventwas:“DevelopingCulturesofExcellenceinAgeingandExploringtheNeedsofMarginalisedGroups”.

ItistheIrishsociety’shighestaccoladeandrecognisesbothmen’scontributionofmedicalcareandeducationforimprovingthelivesofolderpeople.

ProfessorTwomey,anativeofMallow,Co.Cork,wasappointedasthefirstspecialistingeriatricmedicineatCorkUniversityHospital(CUH)in1979.HecontributedgreatlytothewelfareofmedicalpractitionersthroughhisworkwiththeIrishMedicalOrganisation.HewaselectedPresidentoftheIMOin1988.In2000hewasappointedchairmanofComhairlenanOspidealdevelopingspecialistservicesandconsultantpostsinthehealthservice.

ProfessorCoakleyfromCorkcity,excelledacademicallyatUCCandlaterwasawardedhisMDforresearchonneurologicaldiseases.In1979hewasappointedasgeriatricphysicianatStJames’sHospitalinDublinandeightyearslaterbecameTCD’sfirstprofessorofgeriatricmedicine.

Overthepast30years,ProfessorCoakleywasthedrivingforcebehindtheresearchbasedInstituteforAgingontheStJames’sHospitalcampuswhichwaslaunchedin1987.Withgovernment,HSEandphilanthropicfunding,thenew116bedMercer’sInstituteforSuccessfulAgeing(MISA)buildingopenedin2016.

IGSPresident,MoFlynnsaid“Itisagreathonourtorecognisethecontributionsbothdoctorshavemadetowardsthecareofolderpeopleandtheirdedicationinsupportingandencouraginganewgenerationofresearchers,nurses,doctorsandsocialscientistsingerontologicalservices.BothDavisandCillianstillhavealottocontributeintheirrespectiveinterestsinmedicalhistoryandhospicemovement.TheIGSisveryproudtocountthemamongourleadingandmostinspiringmembersassignifiedandrecognisedbythosemedals”

TheLondonChapteroftheUCCAlumniAssociationorganisedaspecialeventhostedbytheEmbassyofIrelandinLondoninpartnershipwithUCCon29thNovember2016.ThefocusoftheeventwasacelebrationoftheIrishcontributiontohealthcareintheUK.

SpeakersincludedH.E.DanMulhall(IrishAmbassadortotheUK),DrMichaelMurphy(PresidentofUCC),ProfessorMarySheppard(LeadingClinicalAcademicPathologistatStGeorge’sHospital)andDrSarahWalsh,(ConsultantDermatologist,King’sCollegeHospitalNHSFoundationTrust).

TheeventwasledbyDrÁineMerwickandMrMarkHorneofUCC’sLondonChapterandtookplaceattheEmbassyofIrelandinLondon.

News from TorontoAftercompletingfouryearsofmedicalschoolintheGEMprogramatUCC,JonathonstartedhisresidencytraininginPaediatricsattheHospitalforSickChildreninToronto.ThefocusonstrongclinicaldiagnosticskillsinhistrainingatUCChasproventobeoneofhisgreatestassetsasheprogressesthroughhisresidency.Oftenheismetwithpraiseregardingthequalityoftraininghehasreceivedandhowitreflectsinhisclinicaldecisionmaking.Further,theuniqueculturalexposergainedfromtraininginvariousunderservedcommunitiesinIrelandhasbeenirreplaceableinhismanagementofthediversepopulationofToronto.

JonathoniscurrentlyfinishinghisthirdyearofgeneralpaediatricstrainingandwillbespendinganadditionalyearasChiefResidentatSickKidsbeforehebeginsfellowshiptraininginPaediatricCardiology.JonathonexplainedthatthereisastrongnetworkofgraduatesfromtheIrishmedicalschoolsystemworkinginCanadaandtheUSAwhoareopentoprovidingassistanceandguidancetofellowtrainees–KeepinTouch!

ProfessorCumminsisaUCCgraduate:MBBChBAOClassof1979.HavingspentthebulkofhiscareerinScotlandandEngland,latterlyasbothaGPandGPwSI(GPwithSpecialInterest,developingandrunningacommunity-basedHeartFailureClinic)hereturnedtoIrelandin2007toworkinacademicGeneralPracticeatRCSIDublin/HRBPrimaryCareResearchCentre.MostofhisworkcentredonteachingfourthyearundergraduatesintheRCSIMBBChBAOdegreeprogramme.

RCSI Perdana UniversityIn2011theRCSIopenedasisterMedicalSchoolinMalaysia,RCSIPerdanaUniversityofMedicine&HealthSciences.By2014-2015academicyeartheinitialstudentintakeweretobegintheirFamilyMedicinerotation(aswellasObstetrics&Gynaecology,Psychiatry,Medicine&SurgeryandPaediatrics).ProfessorCumminswasinvitedbyRCSIDublintobecometheFoundationProfessorofFamilyMedicineandtookuphispostinJuly2014.ProfessorCumminsstates:“It’saveryrewardingjob:thestudentsarebrightandcurioustolearn.Thenumbersarerelativelylowwhichmakesformuchbetterrelationshipsbothbetweenstudentsthemselvesandbetweenstudentsandfaculty.Thestudentsareprofessionalintheirdealingswithpatientsandareapleasure

Dr Keelin O’Donoghue to Lead Implementation of National Standards for Bereavement Care

TheMinisterforHealth,MrSimonHarrisTD,recentlylaunchedtheHSENationalStandardsforBereavementCarefollowingPregnancyLossandPerinatalDeath.Thesenewstandardsclearlydefinethecareparentsandfamiliescanexpecttoreceivefollowingapregnancylossorperinataldeath.Thestandardswillbeimplementedandappliedacrossthehealthserviceinallappropriatehospitalsandsettings.

1. WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT ARE YOU STUDYING?

I’mfromWhitechurchinCork,andgraduatedasaphysiotherapistin2011.Whilstincollege,Ihadbeentoyingwiththeideaofstudyingmedicine,buthavingbeenabitsqueamishallmylife,Iwasn’tsureifitwasreallyforme.Ihadalwayswantedtoworkinhealthcare,giventhatmyGrandfatherwasillduringmyteens,andwewereveryclose.WhenIstartedgoingintohospitalasaphysiotherapist,Iwasexposedtothehospitalenvironmentforthefirsttime,andgotmyfirstrealtasteofhospitalmedicine.Idecidedthentoreturntocollegetostudymedicine,andUCCwasaneasychoice,givenitsexcellentreputationforeducationanditslinkstosomeofthebesthospitalsinthecountry.

2. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT YOUR COURSE?

WithGraduateEntrytoMedicine,thehospitalexposurestartsearlyoninyear1,whichisfantastic,asyoucanimmediatelyseeinpracticewhatyou’relearningincollege.Iwasluckytoointhatourclasswasverytight,andthegraduateandundergraduateentrystudentsweregreatfriends,somethingwhichhasstoodtousinwhathasbeenachallengingfirstfewmonthsintheworkingworld.Medicinecanbequiteanintensivecourse,andthelonghoursspentinthelibraryandhospitaltogethermeansyoumakesomegreatandlastingfriendships.

3. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR DEGREE TAKING YOU IN THE FUTURE?

HavinggraduatedinMay2016,I’mcurrentlyworkinginrenalmedicineinCUH,andwillmoveintotheMaternityHospitalinCUMHinOctobertobetheGynaecologyintern.Atthispointintime,myprimaryareaofinterestisObstetricsandGynaecology,soIhopetopursuefurthertraininginthisareainthecomingyears.MygirlfriendisfromToronto,Canada,andisalsoaGraduateEntrytoMedicinestudent,soitremainstobeseenwhethermypostgraduatetrainingwillbeinIrelandorabroad.

4. PARTING WORDS?

I’mafirmbelieverinthewords‘What’sforyouwon’tpassyou.’WhenIwaspreparingtowritetheentranceexamforgraduatemedicine,afriendintroducedmetothisidea,andIhavetothinkthatthere’ssometruthinit.Ididn’tinitiallyintendtostudymedicine,butIcouldn’tbehappierthewaythingshaveturnedout.IwouldneverchangethewaytheI’veendedupwhereIam.Attheendoftheday,weonlyregretthechanceswedidn’ttake,soifIweretohaveonepartingbitofadvice,itwouldbetonotbeafraidtotakechances.Ifthere’ssomethingyouwanttodo,takeachanceandgoforit.You’llregretitifyoudon’t!

IRISH STREET MEDICINE SYMPOSIUM 2016AnationalconferenceonHealthandHomelessnessrecentlytookplaceinUniversityCollegeCork.MinisterforHousingSimonCovenyT.D.andLordMayorofCorkCllr.DesCahillwereinattendanceatthesecondIrishStreetMedicineSymposium-“Workingtogether–Learningfromeachother.”ThesymposiumcapturedthecomplexhealthchallengesenduredbyIreland’sgrowinghomelesspopulation.Themeeting’sfocuswasontheissuesfacedbyhealthcareprofessionals,hostelandoutreachstaffandancillaryservicesastheyseektoworktogethertoovercomethemanychallengesinvolvedinensuringhomelessandmarginalisedpopulationshaveaccesstoappropriatehealthandsocialcareservices.Thesymposiumallowedthoseworkingonthefrontlinetoshareinformationaboutthedifferentservicesavailableandtohighlightinnovativecaresolutionsthathavebeendevelopedacrossservicessuchasaddiction,mentalhealthprimaryandsecondarycare.

TheSymposiumwasorganisedbytheCorkAdultHomelessIntegratedService,HealthServiceExecutiveSocialInclusionwithUCC’sDepartmentofGeneralPracticeandPartnershipforHealthEquity.

ThePREPAREDprojectisaprimarycarefocusednationalresearchandeducationinitiativecoordinatedbyDrTonyFoley,DepartmentofGeneralPractice,UCC,collaboratingwiththeICGPandwiththeDementiaElevatorProgramme,SchoolofNursingandHumanSciencesatDCU.TheoverallaimsofthePREPAREDprojectaretodevelop,deliverandevaluatedementiatrainingandeducationinterventionsforprimarycareclinicians.

PREPAREDhaspublishedaclinicalwebresourcecalleddementiapathways.iewhichisspecificallydesignedforGPsandprimarycarehealthprofessionals,andwhichincludesclinicalcarepathways,educationalresources,acomprehensivecompendiumofinformationleafletsandguidance,andadatabaseofcommunitybasedclinicalservicesandsupportsavailableforpatientswithdementiaacrossIreland.

Overthesummer,thePREPAREDprojectcommencedtherolloutofaccrediteddementiaworkshopstoGPsinpartsofCork,WaterfordandGreaterDublin.TheseworkshopsarefacilitatedbylocalGPswithaninterestindementia.During2016and2017,thePREPAREDprojectwillbedevelopinganddeliveringfurtherdementiaworkshopsandeducationpackagesforGPsandprimarycareteams,andisdelightedtobeworkingwithcolleaguesintheHSENationalDementiaOfficeandwithotherpartnersincontributingtoincreasedawarenessandknowledgeofdementiacare.

CollegeCork,volunteeredwithOpenMindProjectsinNongKhaiDistrictHospital,

ontheborderbetweenThailandandLaos.Inthemorningssheobservedthe

clinicalaspectsoftheThaiHealthsystem.Theafternoonsandeveningswerespent

teachingEnglishtostaffinvariousdepartmentsofthehospital.Onherdeparture

shehadtaughtEnglishtooveradozendoctorsofvariousspecialities,lab

technicians,hospitalpharmacystaff,emergencymedicinepersonnelaswellasthe

nursingstaffofthelabourward,generalpracticeclinic,emergencyroom,operating

roomandnursingstudentsfromUdonThaniUniversity.Englishissuchauniversal

languagethatitisneededforpatientinteractioninthehospitalonadailybasis

–notjustwithwesternpatientsbutpatientsfromneighbouringSouthEastAsian

countrieswhoareunabletospeakThaibuthavebrokenEnglish.Asaresultof

this,allofthestaffweremorethaneagertolearnhowtotakeahistoryinEnglish,

explainingdiagnoses,breakingbadnewsetc.Fionnualawasexposedtosomeonce

inalifetimerareclinicalcasesandthestaffbenefittedhugelyfromlearningrole

playsspecifictotheiroccupation/speciality.Itwasthefirsttimeamedicalstudent

fromOpenMindprojectswaspermittedtovolunteerinthehospital.
