Problem: The earthquake had destroyed existing cellular terrestrialcommunications networks. Satellite solutions were not appropriatefor transmitting large numbers of video feeds in a local areanetwork. WiFi networks needed large numbers of access points,wiring and controllers which could simply not be deployed in adisaster zone. Problem: Local network may be non-existent,incapacitated or not able to provide QoS due tocongestion. Band network backhaul may be unreliable ornon-existent and local operations must continue withapplications running locally.
Solution: Athonet’s deployed a full mobile edge core ona drone together with IMS, HSS and off-shelf small cell sothat independent local communications could continueeffectively with or without backhaul. Problem: WiFi could not support the demanding mobility/QoSrequirements. Macro LTE networks are loaded with consumer trafficand required large amounts of data to be backhauled leading to issuesin reliability, network usage costs and control.
Solution: Athonet’s agile virtualized edge core allowed a dedicatedhigh performance edge network to be spun-up to meet thedemanding needs of the broadcaster. It allowed Rai Way to providereliable wireless broadband connectivity to cover events and provideimages in real-time from specific areas of interest even during criticalsituations when public networks become congested.

WiFi alternative was complex andexpensive and could not be deployed in such a timescale
Solution: Athonet’s agile virtualized edge core allowed a dedicatedhigh performance edge network to be spun-up rapidly to meet thedemanding, but ad-hoc, needs of the customer. It allowed DeutscheTelekom to provide reliable wireless broadband connectivity to coverad-hoc events and provide HD images in real-time from specificareas of interest even during critical situations when public networksbecome congested.
