Modeling the Rock Cycle

Part A - Weathering & Erosion

• Students each took a different color crayon and made a pile of shavings using a plastic knife.

Part B - Erosion --> Deposition

• Students transported their individual piles into one.

Part C - Compacting, Cementing

• Students applied pressure to the sediments by stepping on them with their foot a few times.

Part D - Metamorphism

• Students held their rock under a heat lamp for 30 seconds and then applied pressure by bouncing on the rock with their weight feet under a board.

Part E - Magma, Lava, Volcanic Activity

• Students heated their rock in a small aluminum cup over a hot pad.

Part F - Cooling & Hardening

• Students poured the melted rock onto an ice cube to cool.
