A minister in Pakistan'sPunjab province known for histough anti-Taliban stance wastoday assassinated by two sui-cide bombers who blew them-selves up at his ancestral home,killing at least 15 people in thebrazen attack.

Shuja Khanzada, 71, theHome Minister of PunjabProvince, and a DSP wereamong the 15 people killedwhen the suicide bombersattacked his political office inhis native Shadi Khan village inAttock district, rescue andadministration officials said.

At least 17 people were alsoinjured in the blast. The condi-tion of three injured persons isstated to be critical.

The suicide bombers enteredthe building disguised as visi-tors and blew themselves up. Asa result of the blast, roof of thehouse caved in burying the min-ister and about thirty other peo-ple.

Inspector General (IG)Punjab Police Mushtaq Sukherasaid two suicide attackers car-ried out the attack.

Saeed Elahi, advisor toPunjab Chief Minister ShahbazSharif, confirmed the death ofKhanzada.

"Punjab Home Minister hasdied in the suicide bombing,"Elahi said. Khanzada's body hasbeen shifted to DistrictHeadquarters Hospital Attock.

"Some 40 to 50 people werepresent at the dera (out house) ofCol Shuja when a suicide bombermanaged to enter the house,"Commissioner Rawalpindi ZahidSaeed said.

Khanzada, a retired colonel,was holding a jirga (reconcilia-tory meeting with his area peo-ple) at his house, some 100 kmfrom capital city of Islamabad,when the attack took place.

The army said that specialsearch and rescue team equippedwith high-tech machinery toretrieve the people trapped underthe rubble of the roof which col-lapsed due to the bombing.

The banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) has claimedresponsibility for the suicideattack on Khanzada, sources inthe interior ministry were quot-ed as saying by Dawn News.

Police said Khanzada wasunder threat following thekilling of LeJ chief Malik Ishaqin July.

The intelligence reports saythat there are at least 150 sleep-er cells of LeJ in south Punjab.Khanzada had also receivedthreats from Al-Qaeda andTahreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.

"The hall of the buildingwhere the meeting was underwaycollapsed in the blast and overthree-dozen people including theminister were trapped in the rub-ble," Punjab Law Minister RanaSanaullah told reporters.

Police sources told PTI thatadequate security was not pro-vided to the minister at hisAttock residence.

"The home minister's securi-ty was not at optimum level athis ancestral place," the sourcessaid. (PTI)
