Summer Reading List for Incoming Third Graders
Mrs. Farley & Miss Chow
Read a book from one of the series below and complete one of the projects. This assignment is due the first
week of school. Although this assignment only requires you to read one book, we strongly encourage you to
read 20 minutes every day throughout the summer!
FICTION:
Christopher, Matt. Sports series
Considered America’s best-selling sports books author, Matt Christopher’s books are relatable stories of
school-age children playing sports.
Gutman, Dan. My Weird School or My Weirder School series
At Ella Mentry School, all the grownups are quite weird in their own weird way. The main characters are A.J.
(a boy who doesn't like school) and his arch-enemy Andrea (who loves school and everything else A.J. hates).
Moss, Marissa. Amelia series
Amelia records her thoughts, likes, and dislikes in a series of notebooks.
Osborne, Mary Pope. Magic Tree House series
Eight year-old Jack and his seven year-old sister, Annie, travel through time on exciting adventures.
Pennypacker, Sara. Clementine series
Clementine is a not-so-common third grader. Daily rituals take on a different view when seen from her eyes.
She's constantly being told that she needs to pay attention, but in her mind she is paying attention and
making astute observations.
NONFICTION:
Various Authors. Who Was… series
This series offers detailed accounts of important historical events or famous figures’ lives.
Osbourne, Mary Pope. Magic Tree House: Research Guide/Fact Tracker series
These are nonfiction guides to the Magic Tree House fiction series.
PROJECT CHOICES:
1. Pretend you are the main character in the story and write at least 3 journal entries as that character. Use events that
happened in the story and reflect on how they affected you as the main character in your entries.
2. Pretend the book you read is becoming a movie and create a promotional item to advertise the story. You can create a
movie poster, t-shirt, hat, or be creative and think of something else to “sell” the story!
3. Create a timeline of the major events in your book. You can use drawings or magazine cutouts on a poster, or create a
digital timeline using computer or tablet software to show the events along the timeline.
Miss Hahn & Mrs. Brinkofski’s 4th Grade Summer Reading Project

colorful, creative & have fun! Even though only one project is required, we still encourage students to read at
least 20 minutes every day!

Summer Reading Project Choices
Project #1 - Create a three-dimensional model of your favorite character and dress him/her as he/she is dressed in the book. As you read, look for specific words or phrases that the author uses to describe the character. Write a three paragraph summary of this character describing why you chose this character and why you think the character looks this way. Reader Beware: Do NOT rely on the picture from the front cover to tell you how the character looks; use the author’s own words. Project #2 - Imagine that you are the author of the book you have just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a three paragraph letter to a movie producer trying to get that person interested in making your book into a movie. Explain why the story, characters, conflicts, etc., would make a good film. Suggest a filming location and the actors to play the various roles. Project #3 - Create a technology-based comic book, which summarizes the story, using presentation software like Powerpoint or Prezi. The comic book should have the following: clip art/pictures, dialogue (conversation bubbles to show characters talking to each other), specific information from the text (actual events that happened), and a title page. Project #4 - Pretend that you are going to join the characters in the story. What things will you need to pack and why? Think carefully because you will be there for one week and there is no going home to get anything. This project should include the following on one page: a drawing of a suitcase with drawings of each item that will be placed in the suitcase, and on a separate page three paragraphs explaining what items were chosen, why the items were chosen, and how they will be used in the story.

Dear Future Fifth Grade Parents,
Summer is a perfect time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. It is also a perfect time to build our reading skills by choosing books that peak our
interest. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills.
Reading promotes mental growth in individuals, the capacity to process information, and the ability to understand themselves and the world around them.
Reading is a skill that is developed only with practice. Students entering fifth grade are expected to read in a “just right” book for 25-30 minutes a day.
In an effort to help children build reading stamina, visualization skills,
thinking, and language abilities, the fifth grade developed a summer “suggested reading list” based on your child’s future grade level. Please share the instructions
on the following page with your child and have him/her complete the Summer Reading Bingo activity sheet and bring back to school on the first day. This will
count as the first homework assignment for language arts. I hope you enjoy your
summer and I look forward to working with you and your child next year.
Sincerely, Mrs. Occhiuzzo

Summer Reading Project: Understanding Character
Step 1: As you read your story, you will keep track of 3 characters you meet in
your story using the chart in this packet. You will include their name, what
he/she looks like, character traits, and text evidence. Try to fill up all the space
in the boxes for each character.
Step 2: Create a model of your favorite character and dress him/her as he/she
is dressed in the book. As you read, look for specific words or phrases that the
author uses to describe the character. You can make your model out of clay, on
paper, or any other way that you would like!
*An example of the reading log and chart are included.
