Reading Fluency

• I will be reinforcing fluency this year. Fluency will first come in the form of letter name recognition worksheet along with letter sound recognition worksheet

• As they learn sight words – they will also be quizzed on how many they can read in a minute to build fluency.

• They will also be given a leveled reader to read weekly (starting in January) until they can read it fluently, with no help and no errors. Then they will switch up to the next level all year.

Writing

• Your child will be writing in a Journal in class (starting in January).

• They will also be learning proper handwriting techniques that I will need help with reinforcing proper technique at home.

• We will learn to make all capital and lowercase letters and numbers appropriately.

• They will learn proper pencil grip as well.

Math

• Eureka Math is the schoolwide chosen curriculum for grades K-5.

• We will focus on addition and subtraction facts to 5. • We will work on addition and subtraction facts within

10 but held to 5 by memorization. • Counting to 100 • Working in place value the numbers 11-19 • Please see your standards handout for explanation

Music, Cooking, I Care Cat and Art

• Kindergarten gets together as a whole and does music and movement 1 day per week.

• We also incorporate a lot of art to increase fine motor skills such as coloring, cutting, gluing, painting, etc.

• We also do a cooking center weekly which involves the students learning to follow directions and become independent learners.

• We also do Character Building utilizing “I Care Cat”. This also incorporates social issues and being a friend.

Class Rules

• I base my rules off of “Whole Brain Teaching”. The six rules incorporate all areas necessary to create a safe, organized learning environment.

• Our class rules are: – Rule #1 – Follow directions quickly. – Rule #2 – Raise your hand for permission to speak. – Rule # 3 – Raise your hand for permission to leave your

seat. – Rule #4 – Make smart choices. – Rule #5 – Keep your dear teacher happy. – Rule#6 – Keep your eyes on the target.

We are an AVID class!

• AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination

• Spring Grove is becoming an AVID school so when the kids transition to the San Benito High School, they will be trained and ready.

• AVID’s mission is the belief that all students can successfully achieve when they are held to high expectations and properly supported.

• Video (Explaining AVID) https://youtu.be/wSKCEms7PZM

Homework

• I will assign about 20 minutes of homework (which includes 15 min of parent/child reading) every night. And a monthly calendar of activities. It is due at the end of the month. No Homework on Fridays.

• The green homework folder is due every day. This teaches them the responsibility of returning a folder for 1st grade. I check math homework on Fridays.

• If you find homework is taking longer than this, please let me know and we can modify if necessary.

Birthdays, Yellow Folders

• Birthdays - On your child’s birthday, I give them a crown, a sticker, a pencil and a card.

• Due to our new Wellness Plan (adopted July 2017) - If you want to celebrate them we can only do this once a month. So all birthdays will be celebrated on 2nd Thursday of each month. It will be a group celebration for all birthdays.

• Thursday “Yellow Folders” will sometimes contain corrected work or assessments, and important school documents. Please empty all contents and go over them and return folder the next day.

• Please put a change of clothes(including underwear) in a plastic bag and label the bag with your child’s name. Accidents do happen!

• Parent helpers are welcomed and needed! I would like at least 1 parent daily to help in centers. Your help may be even just supervising or answering questions, but with your help we optimize the learning in each center.
