BLUE AXIS MAKES TRAFFIC SLOW DOWN
The „blue axis" is thought as a new architectonic trademark of the university. It makes orientation on the campus easy and unique. Moving on the campusbecomes different from moving in the normal city context. Going on the blue track would turn into a synonym of going to the university.
The „blue axis"stimulates exploration by foot and sport activities. Through this new public space the former function of the street as a traffic spaceconnecting different programs, is turned into an "urban sport and fun landscape". The track allows sport activities, there are sport-fields in the park and thehill of the university is suitable for skiing and sledding in winter. Public ski-lockers are added to the blue axis as well as bike-parking, so that the way to theuniversity becomes the daily sport program. Berry fields in the park also encourage the pedestrian to stroll through the bushes and pick a snack. Some of the park areas serve as vegetable gardens. The whole green area with the blue axis is thought to transmit an image of a street reoccupied bypedestrians, more than that of a normal city park.
The traffic exchanger provides and encourages the change from car traffic to slow and sustainable traffic forms, such as tram, bike, or even nordic-skiing tofurther protrude into the city-centre.The commercial, recreational and university functions attract a wide range of users. The traffic exchanger also works as a gate to the city providinginformation and parking space for visitors who then explore the city with public transportation or individual "slow traffic"-forms, which can be rented in thetraffic exchanger.
The blue axis runs from the university down to the river, thus marking a physical connection. A programmatic connection ensures a real unification of thesetwo urban extremes. The student housing at the extremes add inhabitants to the recreational facilities proposed. Students themselves become the „guardians"of their new prolonged campus, adding life at every hour to the other functions. The students on the university hill live next to the ski and sledding slope, thestudents at Elgeseter gate share their gym and cinema, and the students down at the river have occasional parties in the beach-bar.
The blue axis crosses Elgeseter Gate on the same level. The blue track itself turns into speed bumps slowing the incoming traffic down to a reasonable speed.Separating the traffic streams makes the obstacle-free street even faster and noisier. This is the reason for a decision against a bridge or a tunnel.

TRAFFIC EXCHANGER
The Proposal for a student housing and a connecting public space in Trondheim is focused on the idea of merging functions and streams instead of separating them. Based on thetheory that one of the problems of the modern urban strategy is the segregation of uses evading interferences between different traffic forms and life forms, the proposal tries to usethese interferences to create an interesting, multifaceted urban concept.

Introduction of a new element of identification –the "blue axis".In the "blue axis" sport facilities, information points, public recreational areas, traffic lines and traffic interchanging points as well as the student housing and university functions arewoven into a linear urban formation with a high density of use along its whole length. The street as public space will grow beyond the use as a mere traffic connection turning into aprolongation of the urban functions.

In the student housing the proposal explores different grades of "shared living", varying from individual apartments to shared flats or to short term living forms. The "city" building combines large shared working spaces and shared and individual living forms to serve a creative and diversive mix of students. The public functions in the openbase level attract a great veriety of users from the nearby traffic exchanger and the neighbourhood.

Student housing „City"The street level and the first floor are occupied by public functions. A gymnasiumon one side and a cafe with cinema that can be used for concerts or presentationson the other side. In the middle there is a high opening leading into the court. Inthe court the blue track rises up to provide access to the six upper apartmentlevels. This continuous space is covered with a transparent membrane facade. Itcan be opened at the bottom and the top turning it into an outside space.Two-story living rooms are connected to this open space. They include the kitchenand give access to the bathrooms. They are the center of the shared flats. Sharedstudy halls form a ring towards the open access space. Through this ring therooms are connected to the living rooms. The subdivision of the shared flats isflexible, thus making flats between four and eight people possible. On the levels five and six the rooms are independent apartments provided with asmall individual kitchen and a bathroom. Different typologies underline theindividuality of each room. In the private living levels the double height roomsserve as meeting places. In every level a special service is added to the basic equipment of the flats. Sauna, terraces, fitness rooms or rehearsal rooms for bands give every flat a differentquality.
