Muscle and Nervous Tissue

Chapter 3 Miss Wheeler

Muscle Tissue  There are 3 types of muscle tissue

Skeletal muscle   Cardiac muscle   Smooth muscle

Skeletal Muscle  Attached to

skeleton  Voluntary muscles-

You control them.  When they

contract, they pull on bones and skin. Which controls the movement of the body etc.

Skeletal Muscle  Cells are long and

cylindrical (long spaghetti-like cells)

Cells are mutlinucleated- have more than one nucleus in each cell

 Cell have striations- parallel stripes”

Cardiac Muscle  Found only in the heart!  Contract to pump blood through blood

vessels   Involuntary muscles- Your brain controls

them.

Cardiac Muscle  Cells have striations-

parallel stripes  Cells have only 1

nucleus per cell  Cells appear

branched  Cells fit together at

junctions called intercalated disks

Smooth Muscle

Found in walls of hollow organs (stomach, uterus, etc.)

Functions to move material through the body (digesting food)

  Involuntary muscles- Brain controls them

 No striations- SMOOTH. No stripes.

 1 nucleus per cell

Muscle Tissue Summary Muscle Tissue Appearance Nucleus Control

Skeletal Striated Multi Voluntary

Cardiac Striated Single Involuntary

Smooth Not striated Single Involuntary

Nervous Tissue  Located in brain, spinal cord, and nerves  Cells are called neurons  Neurons send and received impulses from

one part of the body to another

Nervous Tissue  Cell body- large center of cell where

nucleus is  Dendrites- receive impulses from other cells  Axon- send impulses to other cells
