Listen to the story. Listen for words that have an ie.
sound in them. Mike, Ryan and Clive were playing hide and seek. Ryan hid in an old
water pipe. Mike decided to lie down by the old lime tree and Clive tried
to get behind a bee hive. This made the bees very angry. They came out
of the hive and began to fly around Clive’s head. Clive was frightened.
Just then, Ivy came riding by on a white horse. “Quick,” she said to
Clive. “Jump on my horse. Then we can ride away together. We can ride
faster than the bees. They will not be able to catch us.”
Clive ran to the horse. He climbed up and sat behind Ivy. They rode five
hundred yards away. Then they were safe.

One day, Kate the Ape went to the lake. She sailed in her boat.
The clouds were gray but it did not rain. At lunch time she ate a
cake that she had baked.
In the afternoon, Kate decided to paint a picture of Sam the
Snake and Erei the Elephant who were standing by the lake
shore.
“I need gray paint,” said Kate, “but I do not have any
left.”
“You can mix black and white to make gray,” Erei said.
“Thank you,” said Kate the Ape. “Now I can finish my
picture.”

Listen for the words that have an .oa sound.
One morning, Mr. Toad ate some oats and three slices of toast. When he
was finished, he got into his car. He drove along a wide road, over some
low hills before arriving at the coast. He found his boat and rowed
happily out to sea.
After rowing for an hour, Mr. Toad felt tired. He fell asleep for a
long time.
When he was asleep, his oars dropped into the ocean and floated
away.
“Oh no,” he croaked. “Without my oars I will not be able to get
home.”
Just then, he saw a big boat on the horizon. “I hope they can see
me,” he thought. He waved his arms and cried “Help! Help!”
The big boat came slowly towards Mr Toad. When it reached him,
the captain said, “Please throw me a rope and I will tow you home.”

Birds of Belize
There are many different birds in Belize. The national bird is the keel-
billed toucan. It has a long beak that is green, yellow and red.
Harpy eagles also live in Belize. They make nests among the leaves
of a tree. Harpy eagles eat animals, including small monkeys.
Many birds in Belize are very colouful. Kiskadees are yellow and
parakeets often have green feathers.
Snowy egrets are white birds. They can often be seen with their feet
in water looking for fish and insects to eat. Other birds that live in Belize
include tiny hummingbirds and beautiful owls.

Lucy and the Mule
Lucy was a famous musician. She lived in a blue house by the
New River Lagoon. Every morning she drank a glass of fruit
juice before playing music for two hours.
One day, Lucy was driving to a concert. She was due to
perform with the Umalali dance group. At Unitedville, her car
broke down.
“What can I do?” Lucy cried. “I do not want to be late.”
Just then a man passed by with a mule.
“You can use my mule,” he said kindly.
“Thank you,” said Lucy. She climbed on the mule and
continued her journey. As the mule walked along, Lucy played
some music on her flute. The beautiful tunes made the mule very
happy.
