Introduction An earthquake is a natural disaster, that is caused by a sudden rush of energy in the Earth’s crust, that creates seismic waves. An earthquake can do a lot of damage.

Cause of Earthquakes Earthquakes are caused by a sudden burst of energy in the Earth’s crust. The different types of the earthquakes are divergent (where the tectonic plates pull apart), convergent (where the tectonic plates push together), and transform (where they ( tectonic plates) slide against each other.

How Earthquakes are measured

Earthquakes are measured by seismographs (syes-mo-grafs). There is also the Richter scale, and the Mercalli scale. The Richter scale was invented by Charles Richter, and the Mercalli was invented by Guiseppe Mercalli.

Example of an Earthquake An earthquake struck San Francisco on the 18th April, 1906, at 5:12 am. The magnitude was 7.9 on the Richter scale, but some people thought it was in between 7.5 and even as high as 8.8. 375 were killed, and 3425 were injured.

Summary So now you know that most earthquakes are deadly, the cause of earthquakes, and how they’re measured!!
