We are pleased to be publishing our first MYP Newsletter for the current academic year.

Amman Academy

In this edition we will be sharing with you snapshots of our MYP activities since the beginning of the year.

Back to School Activities

Under this year’s theme of “Mindfulness and Well-Being”, the Student Life Office planned an engaging

back-to-school event where students had to complete different fitness obstacles and table games to

assemble a baby foot using cardboard. Our students cooled off with freshly squeezed juice at the end of the event.

The MYP team took part in professional development sessions about differentiation, the science and art of mental health, and MYP related matters.

News from the Individuals and Societies Department

MYP year 1 Individuals and Societies students began their unit with an exploration of the solar

system by building Play-Doh models. This activity enabled them to identify and visualize the different

features of the planets. Afterwards, they focused on planet Earth and explored how different types of

maps are used to represent land surfaces and countries. Students also inquired into how maps changed over time as part of the global context “Orientation in Space and Time”.

News from the Arts Department

Our MYP year 1 musicians learned about the origins and history of the marimba percussion

instrument. They practiced playing melodies and collaborated to perform duets.

Our MYP year 2 artists learned all about abstract art and poured their creativity and imagination into transforming objects into abstract paintings.

Our MYP year 3 musicians were introduced to music therapy and the effects of music therapy on the elderly. Students learned how to collaboratively perform several pieces on the hand chimes.

News from the Design Department

MYP year 2 students demonstrated their creative thinking skills in Digital Design by creating sketches for their interactive storyboards to raise awareness about human rights.

MYP year 3 students created digital models in the form of websites to raise awareness among school community members about the misuse of social media by youth.

MYP year 3 Digital Design students attended a referencing session in the school’s media center to consolidate their understanding of the MLA 8th edition referencing style.

MYP year 5 students chose a digital solution (application, website, video) to address the needs of people in a real-life context.

MYP year 1 Product Design students designed and manufactured clocks in the workshop.

News from the Mathematics Department

MYP year 3 students researched the different uses of percentages in daily life.

MYP year 3 students researched factors that affect the enrollment of children in Jordan in the primary

and secondary stages and suggested possible solutions to increase enrollment.

MYP year 4 students used the knowledge they gained in class about percentages to study and analyze

the damage caused by the outbreak of fires in Lebanon. The students explored the IBLP “Caring” attribute as they observed the support and help Lebanon received from its neighboring countries.

News from the Sciences Department

MYP year 4 Physics students investigated the different variables that affect gravitational acceleration.

Our MYP year 5 chemists used their critical thinking skills to investigate the effects of thermal changes

that occur during different chemical reactions and to determine whether a reaction is endothermic or

exothermic.

MYP year 2 students learned about the difference between temperature, heat, and thermal energy,

and explored a map of the Ice Age.

MYP year 3 students collaborated to prepare creative presentations while exploring the stages of pregnancy in humans.

As part of their exploration of the global context Identities and Relationships, our MYP year 3 students were asked to research and write an essay about one of the sexually transmitted infections.

MYP year 3 students demonstrated their understanding of the hearing process by creating different visual forms.

MYP year 1 students measured their heart rate before and after conducting physical activities. They

concluded that the human body accommodates the increasing demand for more blood flow by

increasing the heart rate.

MYP year 1 students researched how certain body systems interact during various types of physical activity.

News from the English Department

MYP year 4 English Language and Literature students studied the context of The Odyssey, and they

researched and collaborated to create posters that demonstrate what they had learned about ancient

Greek gods and goddesses.

MYP year 5 English Language and Literature students learned about propaganda techniques and the

conventions of propaganda posters. Afterwards, they created their own posters reflecting themes

from their novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four.

News from the Physical and Health Education Department

MYP year 1 students practiced fitness components and learned about the food pyramid and how

living a healthy lifestyle can improve the function of our body systems. Learners also designed a

healthy meal plan to raise awareness about this issue.

MYP year 2 students learned the basic skills and rules of handball while exploring the importance of good communication during a game.

MYP year 3 students designed a plan containing drills to improve soccer skills.

MYP year 4 students learned about the rules of badminton doubles along with the game’s skills and positional balance.

MYP year 5 students learned the effects of good communication among team members when playing team sports. Learners also explored international games like Ultimate Frisbee and Rugby.

News from the Sports and Activities Department

Our running team participated in the AAC cross-country race on Saturday the 12th of October at King's Academy, where approximately 30 AA learners competed against 200 students from other schools.

The Sports and Activities Department organized the annual AA Basketball Super League for our MYP

years 1-5 athletes. The League took place from September 28 until November 1 with 60 learners

participating. Participants were grouped into six teams and were supervised by specialist coaches. The

matches held every Friday revealed promising talents and great sportsmanship. The closing ceremony on November 1 included finale matches in addition to the distribution of trophies and gifts.

Our swimming team took part in the Amman Swimming League (ASL) competition on the 1st of

November at King's Academy. Our MYP swimmers achieved excellent results and won first place with

31 gold medals, 23 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals. Many of our swimmers are also members of national teams.

News from the Student Life Office

AA held its second national Model United Nations conference in September. Our organizing team

consisted of 24 students who worked tirelessly to make sure it was the best AAMUN conference yet.

Over 260 students from 13 schools around the nation participated in the event. The conference was a

great opportunity for participants to enhance their leadership and communication skills. We would

like to extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, Bank al Etihad, Talabat, and the International

Professional Bureau; we would not have been able to hold our conference without their support. We would also like to thank our guest speaker, Dr. Mohammad Tarawaneh, for his inspiring speech.

Grades 9 and 10 students acted as delegates to the ASGBSA MUN, where six students won best

delegate awards and three students won runner-up awards. Our students also participated in the

I’MUN where two students won best delegate awards.

Our students participated in the WASEL for Awareness & Education program which aims to transform

the model of volunteering from that of one privileged school helping a less-fortunate school into a

model of joined forces working together to make a difference. Our students are collaborating

with students from a government school (للبنات الثانوية خلدا مدرسة) to learn how to conduct social

initiatives such as writing proposals, creating budgets, forming partnerships with the private sector,

conducting research, and presenting findings. Students will use these new skill sets next semester to launch their social responsibility project.

A presidential debate was organized to help students know more about the presidential candidates

and the platforms they represent.

The Student Council voting process was conducted electronically as students had to access a link to vote in order to ensure privacy and fairness of all votes.

The SLO team organized a ceremony for the winning candidates, where the previous Student Council

President announced the names of the candidates who had received the majority of votes. The

winners gave short thank-you speeches and celebratory gifts were presented to congratulate the winners on becoming members of the Student Council.

The Student Council planned a breast cancer awareness campaign for all students in grades 6-12

where they wore pink and white T-shirts and printed their handprints around the breast cancer logo on one of the playground walls. Collected funds were donated to the King Hussein Cancer Center.

The SLO organized an event to further expose our students to different Arab cultures, traditions and

values. Students enjoyed a tour around 7 different Arab countries in addition to a traditional folklore dance!
