Folktale• An old story that reveals the

beliefs and customs of a culture.• Example) Why Mosquitoes Buzz

in People’s Ears

Historical Fiction• Stories about characters who

might have lived in the past and about events that might have really happened in history with some made up details and events.

• Example) Number the Stars

Legend• A story that is based on fact but

often includes exaggerations about the hero.

• Example) The Legend of Johnny Appleseed

Myth• An ancient story often meant to

explain the mysteries of life or nature.

• Example) The Treasury of Greek Mythology

Play• A story that is told mostly

through dialogue and is meant to be performed on stage.

• Example) Romeo and Juliet

Realistic Fiction• Stories that portray characters

and settings that could exist in real life as well as events that could happen in real life.

• Example) Lunch Money

Short Story• A brief story that usually focuses

on one character and one event.• Example) A Bad Case of the

Stripes

Tall Tale• A humorous story that tells

about impossible happenings exaggerating the accomplishments of the hero.

• Example) Paul Bunyan

Directions:• Each slide will have a description

of a narrative form of writing like the ones we just discussed.

• Using your handout, show the number of the narrative form you think is being described.
