NCR REA NEWS

FROM PRESIDENT CHUCK

H earty greetings to each and every one

of you. Welcome to our Q2

newsletter for 2014, and finally to the

spring season! As I write this

introduction, there have been several

tornados particularly in the South, so we hope you

are safe and healthy.

If you have visited our website recently, you will

have seen the home page announcement for the

NCR-REA Reunion and Annual Meeting scheduled on September 11 and 12,

2014. Although we also announced this in last quarter’s newsletter, this issue

contains details and registration information about this exciting event. Mike

Freeman and his team are working hard---but having fun, too--- planning a

great time for you, our valued members. As with past reunions, we are

reaching out to NCR retirees who are not members, while keeping a razor

focus on keeping the costs as reasonable as possible for you. We are very

appreciative once again to NCR for their support.

Earlier this winter, I had the pleasure of meeting with Tom Schoenheider who

looks after a retiree’s lunch group in Estero, Florida. It is through Tom’s

group and so many others that we can stay connected and recruit new

members. Please check out the impressive list provided on pages 11 and 12.

We continue to receive positive feedback about our website and newsletter.

As always, we welcome your ongoing input and suggestions!

We all look forward to welcoming you to Dayton for REUNION 2014 on

September 11 and 12! For a sneak peek at what plans are underway and to

register for the reunion, see pages 14 and 15.

Best regards,

Chuck Stuart, President

DID YOU KNOW . . . ( S U B M I T T E D B Y K E N C A R R )

I t is said that English is one of the most difficult second languages to learn. Check out the following

homographs and the meaning of one small two-letter word.

Homographs are words of like spelling but with more than one meaning. Here are some examples.

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Having seen the tear in the painting, I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

English was invented by people--not computers. And English reflects the creativity of the human race,

which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the

lights are out, they are invisible.

There is one two-letter word that probably has more meanings than any other

word. That word is UP.

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list. But

when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a

topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election

and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends.

Someone can brighten UP a room, or polish UP the silver; or warm UP the

leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP

the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir

UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing,

but to be dressed UP is special. A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a

store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be

knowledgeable about the proper uses of the word UP, look it UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized

dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are

UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your

time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we

say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth

and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but you see my time is UP. It is time to shut UP and to wrap this UP. Time to

shut DOWN the printer and close DOWN the computer. By the way, I wonder how many meanings

DOWN has?

SO

WHAT’S

UP?

NCR Chairman and CEO Bill Nuti honored with Atlantic Legal Foundation's Annual Award

Nuti recognized for his “strategic vision, integrity and demonstrated leadership in

bringing innovation to the global marketplace”

NEW YORK, NY – (April 3, 2014) – Bill Nuti, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of NCR

(NYSE: NCR) was honored Wednesday in New York City with the Atlantic Legal Foundation's Annual

Award for 2013 in recognition of his “strategic vision, integrity and demonstrated leadership in bringing

innovation to the global marketplace.” Each year, since 1988, the Atlantic Legal Foundation has honored a

person who exemplifies the ideals and principles of public service and private enterprise.

Since joining NCR in 2005, Nuti has orchestrated a multi-year reinvention of the iconic company,

transforming NCR into the global leader in consumer transaction technologies. Under Nuti’s leadership,

NCR has shifted to a hardware-enabled, software-driven business, built a global manufacturing network in

five countries, acquired several high-growth companies in the software and SaaS space, and expanded into

new markets, adjacencies and underpenetrated emerging markets. Currently, NCR enables more than 485

million transactions daily across retail, financial, travel, hospitality, telecom and technology, and small

business.

“I am truly honored to accept this Annual Award from the Atlantic Legal Foundation because it recognizes

not only the reinvention of NCR and the impact the company is having in running the everyday

transactions that make life easier, but also the gift of reinvention within each of us,” said Nuti. “The idea of

reinvention has been a guiding force throughout my life. At NCR, we will continue to push the limits of

what is possible to create the next generation of consumer experience innovation.”

Atlantic Legal Foundation Chairman H. Dan Fisk added: "The Atlantic Legal Foundation is especially

pleased to recognize Bill Nuti, as one of the most deserving honorees among the Foundation's highly

distinguished list of past honorees, and congratulates him on his achievements."

ADS FROM THE PAST . . .

A dvertising has certainly changed over the years.

But these catchy ads clearly captured the

essence of a thriving company at a time of

steady advances in technology--both

mechanical and electronic.

Just the enthusiasm and simple messaging shown here

could entice almost any business to purchase NCR

equipment. Early influential marketing at its best!

Can you guess the approximate years associated with each

of these ads?
