Ecodesign is based on creating objectswhose entire life cycle is environmentallyfriendly.Bothmaterials andprocessesareimportant to it, requiringthe jointworkofscientistsanddesigners.Forthefirsttime, wepresentsixecodesignsforurbanfurniture, sixpilotschemeswithreduced environmental impact, referenceproductsinthesearchtoconserveandpro-tecttheenvironment.
These products achieve the following ad-vantages:Useofrecycledorrenewablematerials.Reduced endweight and volume, facilita-tingtransport.Reducedenergyconsumptionandmainte-nancecosts,duringbothmanufactureanduse.Useofrenewableenergies.Additional functions as regards possibleuses.Recyclable or reusable waste obtained atendofusefullife.

Urbanfurnitureinbigcities,subjecttodai-lyusebythousandsofpeople,isconstantlyinneedofrenewal.Fordecades,designershave been working to launch prototypeswhich are better adapted to users’ needs, easytouse, safe, comfortableanddurable. In recent years anew sensitivity to ecolo-gicalconcernshasleadtonewdesigncri-teria: objects have to be reclaimable andreusable, theyhavetomakeuseofrecycledmaterials, theycan’tcreatewaste, andtheymust be energy efficient. The Ecodesignexhibition presents six prototypes createdbyateamofarchitectsanddesignerswiththeintentionofshowingthepossibilitiesofthekindofdesignthattakesenvironmentalconcernsintoconsiderationwithoutsacrifi-cingpracticalityorbeauty.Theprototypesinquestionare:aself-sustainingstreet lampmadeofarecycledconcretebaseandaso-larpanel;abicycle rackmadeof recycledplastic which also serves to prevent carsfromparkingonthesidewalk;anadjustablebenchmadeoutofdifferentmaterialsac-
