Largest ever health capital investment in Victoria of up to $1.5 billion to deliver

the 504 bed New Footscray hospital.

Demand for hospital services in Melbourne’s west is

expected to more than double within the next 20 years

Population growth Increased utilisation

Melbourne’s west is forecast to grow by more than

550,000 residents by 2036-37, an increase of more

than 60% on the current population.

New treatment options are increasing the utilisation

of hospital services.

Growth in ageing population Local demographics

Older population in western Melbourne to grow by

153% by 2036, compared with 95% for all Victoria.

Low income or welfare dependent families comprise

11.7% of the population in western Melbourne,

compared with 8.7% average across the state.

A system-wide response is required to meet this demand
