PRAYER UPON ENTERING CHURCH
Father, when I lean on my own understanding I fall prey to
thinking in the natural and limit the work of the supernatural.
But when I trust You with all my heart I leave no room for
second guessing. Today I want to acknowledge Your
presence in every area of my life…family, work, relationships,
health, intellect and every other area of my life. You will bring
to pass the plans You have for me as I wholeheartedly trust
You for all that concerns me and those I love. Amen. REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION
The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the
confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives
into our mouths not only bread and wine but his very body and
blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to
strengthen our union with him and with one another. Our Lord
invites to his table those who trust his words, repent of all sin,
and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that
they may show forth his death until he comes. Because those who eat and drink
our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because
Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any
who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that
of this congregation and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and yet desire
to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor before the
service. (If time does not permit this, please speak with the pastor immediately
following the service and an additional communion time can be made
available specifically for you.)
We pray for a speedy return of our Risen Lord and Savior so that these times of
division may cease, and we can all join together in the communion and
fellowship of all Christians in heaven.
NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with non-
alcohol wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or wish to
abstain from alcohol for personal reasons.

Welcome, Announcements and Opening Prayer
T Service of Light T
Opening Hymn 368 “Angels We Have Heard on High”
1 Angels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply,
Echoing their joyous strains.
ref Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
2 Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heav’nly song?
3 Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

P Let us pray
P Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before You,
O Lord, and let Your loving-kindness descend on us that,
with purified minds, we may sing Your praises with the
Church on earth and the whole heavenly host and may
glorify You forever.
C Amen
Old Testament Reading Isaiah 30:15–17
15For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel,
“In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
But you were unwilling, 16and you said,
“No! We will flee upon horses”;
6
therefore you shall flee away;
and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”;
therefore your pursuers shall be swift. 17A thousand shall flee at the threat of one;
at the threat of five you shall flee,
till you are left
like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,
like a signal on a hill.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Epistle Romans 8:31b–39
If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare
his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also
with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any
charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to
condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that,
who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed
is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of
Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine,
or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through
him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor
angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor
powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in
Christ Jesus our Lord.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Luke 12:35–40
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twelfth
chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
[Jesus said:] “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps
burning,
and be like men who are waiting for their master to come
home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the
door to him at once when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake
when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for
service and have them recline at table, and he will come
and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the
third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But
know this, that if the master of the house had known at what
hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house
to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man
is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.
Sermon Hymn 388 "Go Tell It on the Mountain"
ref Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and ev’rywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!
1 While shepherds kept their watching
O’er silent flocks by night,
8
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light. Refrain.
2 The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo, above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior’s birth. Refrain.
3 Down in a lonely manger
The humble Christ was born;
And God sent us salvation
That blessèd Christmas morn. Refrain.

T SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT T
Preface
P It is truly good, right, and salutary … evermore praising
You and saying:
Sanctus
10
Prayer of Thanksgiving
P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have
had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your
only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be
our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation
accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His
body and His blood on the cross.
Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus,
we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen
us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His
body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own
testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends
of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage
feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.
Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.
To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship,
with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
C Amen.
11
Lord's Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
The Words of Our Lord
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was
betrayed, took bread, and when He had given
thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and
said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for
you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
P In the same way also He took the cup after supper,
and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them,
saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the New
Testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the
forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of Me.”

Distribution Hymns 384 "Of the Father's Love Begotten"
1 Of the Father’s love begotten
Ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega,
He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see
Evermore and evermore.
2 Oh, that birth forever blessèd,
When the virgin, full of grace,
By the Holy Ghost conceiving,
Bore the Savior of our race,
And the babe, the world’s Redeemer,
First revealed His sacred face
Evermore and evermore.
3 This is He whom seers in old time
Chanted of with one accord,
Whom the voices of the prophets
Promised in their faithful word.
Now He shines, the long-expected;
Let creation praise its Lord
Evermore and evermore.
4 O ye heights of heav’n, adore Him;
Angel hosts, His praises sing.
Pow’rs, dominions, bow before Him
And extol our God and King.
Let no tongue on earth be silent,
Ev’ry voice in concert ring
Evermore and evermore.
5 Christ, to Thee, with God the Father,
And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee
14
Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving
And unending praises be,
Honor, glory, and dominion,
And eternal victory
Evermore and evermore. Amen.
374 "Gentle Mary Laid Her Child"
1 Gentle Mary laid her child
Lowly in a manger;
There He lay, the Undefiled,
To the world a stranger.
Such a babe in such a place,
Can He be the Savior?
Ask the saved of all the race
Who have found His favor.
2 Angels sang about His birth,
Wise Men sought and found Him;
Heaven’s star shone brightly forth
Glory all around Him.
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight,
Heard the angels singing;
All the plains were lit that night,
All the hills were ringing.
3 Gentle Mary laid her child
Lowly in a manger;
He is still the Undefiled
But no more a stranger.
Son of God of humble birth,
Beautiful the story;
Praise His name in all the earth;
Hail the King of glory!

Closing Hymn 805 "Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow"
1 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
