Information on the Availability of DIBELS 6th Edition A message from DMG, the authors of DIBELS: DIBELS 6th Edition will remain available through the 2011–2012 school year. After that time, we will no longer support the use of 6th Edition, and we request that all schools transition to DIBELS Next for the 2012–2013 academic year.

We think the transition is important because DIBELS Next is a significant improvement over DIBELS 6th Edition.

Advances include:

• Clearer directions for assessors and students.

• All new forms and passages. The new DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency passages have exceptionally consistent passage difficulty levels.

• A new measure of early phonemic awareness, First Sound Fluency, which replaces Initial Sound Fluency. FSF is easier to administer than ISF, and does not require the use of pictures.

• A new measure, Daze, which has been added as an additional indicator of comprehension.

• Detailed information about DIBELS Next can be found at http://dibels.org/next/.

As the authors and publishers of DIBELS, Dynamic Measurement Group, Cambium/Sopris, and Wireless Generation are committed to providing a smooth transition to DIBELS Next. To aid in this transition, we have provided both 6th Edition and DIBELS Next for the 2010–2011

To develop the materials, members of DMG’s Professional Development team worked closely with representatives from Wireless Generation, the developers of mCLASS: DIBELS Next software.

Dorman said, “Our partnership with Wireless Generation in developing this training ensures that the content provides the thorough instruc-tion necessary for DIBELS asses-sors to administer the measures using both printed materials and

mobile devices.”

For more information about the Tempe, Arizona, event or to register, visit http://dibels.org/.

An upcoming DIBELS training event in Tempe, Arizona will demonstrate both the paper/pencil and mobile versions of DIBELS Next. This is the first time that an official DMG training event will demonstrate the administation and scoring of the DIBELS Next measures using both methods.

The event will take place on January 24 –27, 2012 in Tempe, Arizona. Devel-oped by DMG’s Professional Development team, the train-ing meets the same standards of high-quality DIBELS train-ing as other available workshops, with added content relevent to mobile users. The workshop will be presented by DMG’s Director of Professional Development,

Q CornerAAnswers to your DIBELS Next Scoring Questions

Q: Is Easy CBM Math the same as DIBELS Math?

A: Easy CBM is not affiliated with DIBELS. DMG is in the process of developing DIBELS Math, but it is

still in the research and development stage. Check our website for periodic updates, http://dibels.org/.

Q: I have a student who scored much lower on her winter benchmark assessment than her fall

benchmark. Feeling that the score was inaccurate, I administered progress monitoring forms and her

scores were considerably better. Which score should I record in our data management system?

A: If validation results show that her initial score was inaccurate, you would replace the initial score with

the more accurate score. (You don’t want all your reports to be based on data that you know is wrong.)

Q: The published version of DIBELS Next only includes 10 progress monitoring forms for each grade

level for Daze. Are additional forms available?

A: Yes. If you choose to progress monitor Daze more frequently, 10 additional forms are available for

free download at https://dibels.org/next/. The passages for both the published and download versions

are in the same order, so if you decide to download and progress monitor with the additional Daze forms,

you would continue with story 11.
