David James appeal for a heart operation in Brisbane is a first time experience for us to send a patient
overseas. We would like to sincerely thank our Fijian friends who recently donated K6,000.00
towards David’s appeal. It might be a long shot but we are determined to get David through. PM
O’Neill Foundation gave us the assurance to help us send David overseas hence we are still awaiting
their responds. In the mean time those who wish to support David to go through that operation are
encouraged to donate to the David appeal. We will continue to pursue till we get David overseas.

The Prevention of Parent To Child
Transmission of HIV (PPTCT) program
SCF is undertaking at Sir Joseph
Nombri Memorial Kundiawa General
Hospital (SJNMKGH) is a small but
important step towards saving a silent
generation of Simbus and Papua New
Guineas.
Mothers living with HIV can give birth
to HIV negative child if they are closely
monitored through the PPTCT program. At the antenatal clinic all pregnant mothers are firstly tested
for HIV status. Those who are positive are on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. During delivery trained
nurses or midwives make sure the baby is delivered safely. In the first 4 weeks both mother and baby
are on ARV treatment. When the baby is 6 weeks old it undergoes the first HIV test through the dry
blood spot method. The baby is continued to be breast fed for 6 months then commends on lactogen
for two months and second HIV test is taken, again through the dry blood spot method. When tested
negative the final test is taken when the child is one year six months old. Should the final result turn
negative the child is medically cleared of HIV.
Mingende Rural Hospital is a leader in the PPTCT program in Papua New Guinea.
“ After an initial trial period and several changes to guidelines over the years, the PPTCT
programme saw 41 babies testing negative, which includes all 25 of the most recently tested
babies since 2009. It is an accomplishment that reinforces the fact that elimination of mother to-child
transmission of HIV is a realistic public health goal. It is also an important part of the campaign to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).”
Together We Can, The Success of The Mingende Practise Model for PPTCT of HIV in PNG, UNICEF
(2011)
At the SJNMKGH we are receiving on 4 - 8 cases per month. Lactogen cost K90 hence for 8 kids to
use lactogen over a period of 52 weeks will cost K37,440.00. We are receiving rural mothers who can
not afford K90 lactogen for the said period. Introducing lactogen to the babies is to reduce the chances
of babies contracting HIV through the breast feeding from their HIV mothers.
SCF is proud to announce the sponsorship of this program by the Department of Mineral Policy &
Geohazards Management with K15,000.00. The money will be used mostly to buy lactogen for rural
mothers. Thank you Secretary Shadrach Himata and Director Geohazards John Arumba. This will
go a long way to saving a silent generation.
WHAT IS SCF’s LONG TERM GOAL FOR THESE CHILDREN SAVED FROM HIV? SCF asks: Will these children ever reach university level?
Will their parents be still around to push them through?
In this country health indicators are very poor hence there is no guarantee their parents will be around.
“ The health indicators of PNG are among the worst in the Pacific. In 2002, PNG became
the first Pacific Island country to have a generalized HIV epidemic, when the
prevalence of HIV in the Port Moresby General Hospital among antenatal women
reached 1 %. Having the highest prevalence rate of HIV in the Asia-Pacific Region,
HIV/AIDS in PNG has moved far from being only a health problem to a human
development challenge” International Labour Organization Decent Work Country Program
Papua New Guinea (2009 – 2012)
SCF’s PLAN: All the babies with the consent of their parents are transferred from the hospital to an
institutionalised care centre. Their welfares, health and education are cared for by the care centre till
they reach university or other tertiary colleges. They then have an obligation to put back into the care
centre, money and other resources when they step out into the world. By then we sit back with a cuppa
and smile; we have saved a generation who is right now very silent because they are voiceless.

Starting this month going forward SCF will acknowledge and feature those who in their own little
ways try to help others through SCF. They will be called SCF WARRIOR HEARTS:
SCF WARRIOR HEARTS for March are Emily Mason, Peter & Rose Kranz
Emily’s Initiative: Story by Lola Collins
This beautiful young lady is 15yo Emily with her
mum Agnes Mason. Emily lives in Brisbane and
recently celebrated her 15th birthday. She advised
her school friends that instead of gifts she would like
them to donate the money they would spend to a
little boy that she had overheard her mother talking
about. His name is David James she told them and
then described David's journey, how he lives in a
village of her home Province in PNG and has had 2
heart surgeries and how he will be coming to Bris-
bane for his third surgery and that SCF Team SE-
QLD which her mum belongs to will be hosting Da-
vid and his mother Lina.
Emily organised all this on her own initiative and
advised her parents on her birthday. Yesterday her
mum Agnes told us this story at our Team meeting
and there were teary women everywhere. Team SE-
QLD plans on having a welcome BBQ for David,
his mum Lina and Jimmy Drekore when they arrive in Brisbane. The team will invite Emily and her
friends and they can meet David and present the funds raised to David and his mum.
Emily and her friends raised AUD$700.00 for David.
We encourage children to attend SCF Team meetings so that they can be part of the experience and
learn how to participate instead of being observers.
Children like Emily are the future of Simbu Children Foundation.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I, Mr George Ulka, as the first product of Mother Of Life Centre would like to take this honour to
firstly thank the good father of all orphans and provider of everything with all my heart and being.
Secondly I thank the only unique and outstanding care centre in Simbu and the country which can
operate with more than 50 kids in different institutions, both government and private for 10 solid years
without any financial or material support from Government or NGOs.
MOLC has sponsored and is continuing to sponsor students who are orphans, neglected, disadvantaged
and poor with full school fee and subsidises all their school materials too. These students are now in
different levels of education; from primary, high school, secondary, technical institution, colleges and
one in university. Some products of MOLC are now working while some are still in search of jobs and
others doing their practical.
From my observation , only Simbu Children Foundation (SCF) is doing a tremendous job trying to
wipe off tears from the kids of MOLC. When I was doing Gr12 at Rosary Secondary SCF came to
know MOLC. I was fortunate to be fully sponsored by SCF especially President Jimmy Drekore and
his team from Lihir. Not only that, Team Western Australia donated to me some reading books, DVD,
CDs, watch, Xmas card with greetings. My word of gratitude to Team Lihir and Team WA. SCF did-
n’t cease and give up, she continually monitored my progress and again donated workshop uniforms
and safety boots for my practical when I was in Don Bosco Tech. Word of acknowledgement to SCF
president, Mr Jimmy Drekore for delivering all these stuff to the school.
When I was working with Kumul Construction in Kundiawa, SCF President & wife Merrylynn wel-
comed me into their house and provided food and accommodation. Thanks again SCF President and
wife Merrylynn. You were so kind and eager to help me and all the kids in MOLC and Simbu as a
whole. The good lord will bless you accordingly for the heart you have for the kids of MOLC and sick
kids in Simbu.
I realise that SCF has a heart that is rare and unique. A heart that can hear the cry of homeless, or-
phans, disadvantage and especially the sick and disable children of Simbu. Thank you very much SCF
for your kind and endless support to the sick and disadvantage children of Simbu. God will bless SCF
abundantly because you give cheerfully and voluntarily with a smiling heart. I believe Simbu won’t
change unless Simbus imitate the heart of SCF.
FUTURE INTENTION FOR MOLC AND SCF
I won’t ever forget MOLC and SCF in my entire life because they are my two wings that lifted me up
when I was struggling in the ocean,. My future aim is to become an electrical engineer.
Currently George works as a Technician/Electrician with Harvest Elect. Ltd, a contractor to Digicel.
He is given a house, a 24hr car, a security guard and looks after 5 Digicel towers in the Southern
Highlands. George dreams of becoming an electrical engineer one day, we will push him through.

Simbu Children Foundation (SCF) started in 2004, from the isola-
tion ward at Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial Kundiawa General
Hospital, (when I first encountered the sick children) to Lihir island
(I threw the idea of starting a humanitarian organisation to help sick
kids with Simbus on Lihir Island), to the Port Moresby Botanical
Gardens (gauging the views of Simbus in POM and students at
UPNG), to Gerehu (having meetings with interim Execs, Brown
Bolzy, Daniel Kale and Martin Waure), to getting the constitution
in place (Drafted by Stanley Alphonse who was doing his masters
in Brisbane) to finally registering with Investment Promotion
Authority (IPA).
Like any new ventures in Simbu, there are always those who are
sceptical: “They said it was another political vehicle for 2007”
Unfortunately 2007 came and my face didn’t appear in the posters.
They went quiet but the SCF engine grew louder. SCF teams were
set up in mining towns across the country, interested volunteers
started setting up teams in their various locations with Team
Melbourne as the first overseas team. Our first real venture into
saving lives was in 2009 when we sponsored heart patients to the
operation open heart in Port Moresby. We didn’t get any support from any government organisation
but we pursued because we loved what we do. The sceptical room illuminated sounding alarm when
next election 2012 started approaching, some of our volunteers dropped back, others were quiet and
waited, of all the colourful posters my face was missing.
Thanks to Governor Noah Kool for the first time SCF received a government cheque of K100,000.00.
He promised in front our well educated elites at the 2012 SCF Xmas Ball that he will continue that
commitment throughout his term. It is rather sad his government discontinued that commitment in
2014. Governors will come and go, promises and commitments will come and go, dreams are dreams
but SCF is here to stay, to serve the little people beyond the call of duty.
25 children wouldn’t be alive today if SCF was not around and that has boosted and encouraged us to
do more to save other children.
I have resigned from professional duty last year (2013) May, not to pursue 2017 but to follow my
heart’s desire. Come election time, everyone will rush to paint beautiful portraits and use eloquent
words; I will be sad because my face will not appear on colourful posters but in the mountains
searching for the voiceless. The reality is that, what the mouth speaks is heard now but is blown away
tomorrow. The legs that do the walking now will hurt but the foot print will be there for the next
generation to see and follow. To me that is living a fulfilled life and leaving a story for the next
generation to emulate.
SCF is already doing wonders by saving and serving the voiceless and all the success stories is the
culmination of collective efforts from all our members, volunteers, supporters, families, friends and
sponsors in PNG and across the world who give whole heartedly their time, money, resource and
efforts diligently without a dime in their pockets but satisfaction in seeing others been helped. In this
beautiful and rich nation where politics and corruption is using our people for minority gain let us
sprout from the rot and stand with astuteness and be a shining example to the rest of the world, from
the mud something fresh can grow.
Now that I am full time on the ground in Simbu I am making myself available to helping others in
whatever capacity I can. I have recently ventured into coaching Gr 10 maths and chemistry starting
with Kundiawa Lutheran Day High School. I have alerted secondary schools in Simbu if they are
interested I can take Gr12 Maths, Chemistry and Physics.
I will serve Simbu and politics is for politicians - Jimmy Drekore SCF President & Founder
