Here are some tips to help make your Job & Internship Fair experience a success!
Take a warm—up lap. Walk through the fair to identify the locations of employers you are interested in and observe the interaction between the recruiters and the candidates.
Determine which organizations you want to visit and rank order them by priority.
Practice with low priority organizations first to calm your nerves.
Research any organizations that you are unfamiliar with on your phone. Be prepared if they ask you “What do you know about our organization?”.
Listen to those in line ahead of you to learn what the recruiter is looking for, to learn more about the organization and what types of questions they may ask.
Pick-up any available organizational information and read it.
Greet the recruiter with a smile, clear voice, good handshake and your brief introduction. Review the following page to learn how to create an elevator speech. Have your resume ready to give to the recruiter.
Ask questions that demonstrate your preparation and insight.
Be mindful of the recruiter’s (and others in line) time… no more than 3-4 minutes.
Broaden your focus and include many employers. If the organization is looking for candidates in a field different from yours, ask if they anticipate openings that are related to your field. Better yet, ask if they can refer you to a contact person in your area of interest.
Try to find out what follow-up procedures/next steps are necessary to further discuss job opportunities. Ask for the recruiter’s business card.
SMILE and express your appreciation for the recruiter’s time!
FOLLOW-UP with a well written thank you letter or email to the recruiter reiterating your interest in their organization within a day or two.

Job & Internship Fair
What is an Elevator Speech?
The Elevator Speech is a 30 - 60 second marketing tool that lets those whom you meet know where you have been and where you are hoping to go in the future.
How do I create an Elevator Speech?
To create your own Elevator Speech, ask yourself:
Who am I?
What do I have to offer?
What are my strongest skills and abilities or what have I done related to the field?
What career am I interested in?
Why am I interested in this organization or profession?
The Elevator Speech
“Hello, my name is Sam Johnson and I'm a senior majoring in Psychology at Bridgewater State. I have interned at Father Bill’s in Brockton, in their workforce development office. I recently saw a job listing on your website for a homeless advocate. I was hoping you could tell me about this position.”
Sample Elevator Speeches
I am a junior at Bridgewater State University, majoring in management. I am a shift leader at McDonald’s managing 6 people during my shift and working 30 hours a week while attending school full-time. In addition, this past fall, I interned in the customer service division at MEDITECH providing online support to healthcare clients and learned a few supervisory skills. I am interested in building a career as a manager in the software industry or in government.
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION
WHEN DO INTERNSHIPS OCCUR? WHO CAN DO AN INTERNSHIP?
Fall: September – mid-December Freshman & Sophomores: For non-credit experience only Spring: January – mid-May Juniors: For credit or non-credit Summer: May/June – mid-August Seniors: For credit or non-credit
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT vs. NON-CREDIT?
An internship for credit involves a site supervisor, a faculty internship advisor and the student intern. The student must complete an internship application, have the internship site and credit hours approved by their faculty internship advisor, then register for the internship. Both field duties and academic work are expected of the student. Clocked hours, credit, a grade and an evaluation complete the experience.
A minimum of 45 clocked hours in the field is required for each credit granted in an internship or practicum. Three credits is equal to 135 clocked hours for a 15 week semester (fall or spring) or 10 weeks during the summer. Students typically work a minimum of 9-10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and a minimum of 13-15 hours per week during the Summer semester. Hours committed to a non-credited internship are determined by agreement between the employer and the student. A non-credit internship involves a site supervisor, the Internship Program Office and the student intern. Students must obtain approval from an employer for a non-credit experience. Students are encouraged to keep a weekly journal. No credit, grade or evaluation is required.
IF MY INTERNSHIP IS UNPAID, CAN I GET FUNDING?
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts supports a program for students in credit-bearing internships. If approved for eligibility, students may apply for funding, which is awarded in the form of a one-time stipend to help with offsetting costs directly associated with the internship. Additionally – thanks to the commitment of our university administration and generous donations by supporters of the Bridgewater State University Foundation, we are able to offer an alternative funding source to students who are not eligible to receive funding through the State. You do not have to sacrifice valuable work experience for lack of financial resources! Contact the Internship Program Office for details about how to apply.
Discover the work you love… The Internship Program Office assists students in taking their educational experience one step further. With opportunities to explore careers and gain professional experience, our students enhance their skills and qualifications for their future jobs. Contact or visit our office to learn more about how you can include an internship in your BSU experience! Rondileau Campus Center, Rm 204 – internships@bridgew.edu – 508-531-2632
WHERE DO I BEGIN LOOKING FOR AN INTERNSHIP? Here are five steps to consider when starting your search:
1. Review the internship postings on the Hire BSU database. 2. Contact your academic department to see if they are aware of available internships in your field or to find out where previous students have interned. 3. Create your own internship. Contact companies that interest you and inquire if internships are available within their organization. 4. Consider applying to The Washington Center Internship Program or the College for Social Innovation Program (contact our office for details). 5. Visit internship-focused websites. Our intranet department website features a list of sites and their direct links https://my.bridgew.edu/departments/InternshipProgram.
