Up until this week, I couldn’t understand why my fifteen year old brother spent the past two years saving up for a $1200 Les Paul guitar. It took him months to decide on which one he wanted, and when he found the right fit, it was his. Although I was incredibly impressed by his dedication, I failed to imagine any single item that would give a sophomore in high school that much self-restraint. I realize now, upon writing this article, that a guitar is not just a tool but a piece of art in itself, too. My brother’s instrument is a craft in more ways than one.
Oakwood’s shop owner Aron Robbins says that you can tell a lot about a person by the type of guitar they play: “Whether it be the wood it’s made out of or the electronics they prefer. All of it tells a different story, and all of it has a tone and sound of its own.” This month, Oak City Hustle got to chat with the guitar craftsman about his work.
Growing up in the Raleigh scene, Aron epitomized the rock ‘n roll persona: “Spending countless nights standing in line outside the brewery, black x’s still on both hands from the night before.” He had the dream, and he knew he had
to go for it. Aron made his start working at Mars Music, where he spent most of his time in the repair shop: “I found myself hanging out in the repair shop probably more than the tech would’ve liked. I was that annoying kid. Always asking him questions. Always killing his productivity. I was just too fascinated to leave him alone.” We all know that feeling, that kind of irrefutable and interminable curiosity. Maybe it’s some sort of switch that flips and lights the fire you knew was somehow there all along. When it happened to Aron, he was hooked.
He started working on his own gear, practicing all that he had observed. Eventually, he moved to Charlotte and in 2008, after seven years of learning his trade, he opened a repair shop. It was in Charlotte that a very crucial person was added to his story, his wife and (now) shop manager, Kristin. When Aron told us how they met, he explained: “The short of the story is that I got to work on this pretty young lady’s guitar, which happened to

have a huge warranty issue. Naturally, I had to give her a minute-by-minute update as to how the problem was going to be fixed.... so I married her. Problem solved!” Upon starting a new chapter in their own lives, they re-launched the business in August of 2013 in downtown Raleigh.
Expanding beyond just repairs, the shop sells used, vintage, and boutique gear…and has its own music school. The business is family-run, and it doubles as their home. In response to this close work-family relationship, Aron told us that he really is a lucky guy: “One minute I may be doing a routine fret leveling, the next, I’m chopping it up with some touring band and then it’s off to snack
time with my little one! I don’t think you could ask for much more.” This tight-knit feel is exactly what Aron envisioned, never wanting to compete with the big boys. He wanted “something smaller, more organic, with the community being the center of it all.”
When we asked Aron if he had any last words for the article, he explained: “When people come here, I want them to feel valued and cared for. I want them to leave here feeling confident with the information that I present them, the guitar lesson they just got, the bone nut and saddle I just fabricated for them, or the vintage Les Paul they just picked up. I want them to feel solid. I want them to feel at home.”

GHOSTS & BLUEGRASS: THE ART OF TIM LEE
WORDS: HEATHER LEAH
From the day of his birth, Tim Lee’s penchant for the bizarre and creative was foretold: He and his two brothers were all born on the 13th day of the month.
With low brow pop surreal wood paint-ings, he weaves stories of spectral blues musicians haunting back alleys in the 1920’s. Are they ghosts? Or are they simply lingering memories of a final, fading music note from a time almost forgotten? His art, filled with skull-people and creatures from a vin-tage oddities circus show, spins tales that make Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” mad with envy.
“I just want to make something that’s cool,” Lee explains. “I want to tell a sto-ry about this guy in a black suit, and he’s dead, and he’s carrying a guitar, and what his life is all about. I want to give the viewer enough clues and visual metaphors to create their own story, too.”
After attending a proper art school, graduating in fine arts, and spending years as a freelance and corporate digital illustrator, Lee finally started doing art on his own terms.
“I sometimes burn out on assign-ments and freelance,” he says, sum-ming up the struggle of every artist. “I’ve done hundreds and hundreds over the years. When I switched to do-ing my own stuff, I can focus on what I love. It doesn’t feel like work.”
“But making art can be expensive,” he says. His day job allows the luxury of affording resins, fancy paint, large canvases, and a 3D printer for some spectacularly macabre figurines.
While, like many artists, Lee dreams of a time when his personal art can be-come a full-time job, there’s no question-ing the success of his freelance illustrations, which have been seen all throughout Raleigh. His work hangs in Father & Son’s, Beehive Gallery, and Amplified.
“Low brow pop surrealist galleries are a small community. There’s not a central location for folk art in Raleigh. Drives me crazy.”

Perhaps most memorably, his art decorated Raleigh’s streets during the World of Bluegrass Festival in 2014. “It was weird,” he recalls, laughing, “seeing my art four stories tall on the convention center.”
Bluegrass, folk music, and jazz cast heavy overtones in Lee’s paintings, who also plays mandolin in a group called The Hey Brothers. “I’ve done five paintings based on old folk songs. It’s mystical, but it’s folklore. There’s some creepy, spooky stuff, but it’s not unhappy. The music doesn’t ever go away.”
Whether on a woodblock, an oil painting, or a resin sculpture, Lee’s work keeps Raleigh’s imagination twirling in his strange worlds. With eerie, yet whimsical, folk-music spirits and odd monsters, he has many stories left to tell.
“I just never stop. ‘Keep climbing my own personal mountain,’ like Neil Gaiman said. I can’t stop doing it.”

THE ART OF COOLCICELY MITCHEL
WORDS: STACEY WEGER | PHOTO: CHRIS CHARLES & JOE BRUNO
When one thinks of the sultry sounds of jazz and soul drifting through darkened city streets, one might be hearkened back to the origins of Dixieland music, New Orleans. Or to dimly lit Prohibition-era speakeasies, the underground cultivators of jazz. But Triangle residents can find jazz alive and well, and in their own backyard. The Art of Cool Festival, held in Durham April 24-26, will bring an array of talented musicians to multiple venues to share their love for the musical genre with aficionados and neophytes alike.
The festival, a relative newcomer to the local circuit, has big plans for its second year. With five indoor venues and two outdoor stages, Durham will soon be overflowing with the sounds of jazz. Showcasing music ranging from Grammy award winning artists to regional and local acts to student bands, the festival is thriving thanks in large part to the work of Cicely Mitchell. Alongside the Art of Cool co-
founder, jazz trumpeter and educator Albert Strong IV, Mitchell has made it a goal to spread her love for the music to area residents.
Jazz has been a lifelong interest of Mitchell’s. “I’m from West Tennessee so Memphis Blues and my Dad’s soul record collection were my first introductions to the music,” says Mitchell. She found the style both fascinating and intimidating. “After meeting Al Strong and checking out the scene, I became a zealot of the genre. I loved the music so much, and felt that I could help market it.” And so Mitchell set out, conducting the research that eventually led to the Art of Cool Project, a nonprofit organization with the mission to present, preserve, and promote jazz-influenced music.
“We wanted to provide a platform for independent jazz musicians to build a larger audience,” says Mitchell. This is what led to her and Strong’s idea for a

large-scale music festival. Though she is self-described as having “no musical bone in my body,” Mitchell has done her homework by studying national trends and conducting local surveys. “I’m the numbers behind AOC,” she says. Her research pays off by way of an impressive lineup for the 2015 three-day event. “We tried to focus on four areas this year: traditional jazz, soul, fusion, and international.”
Mitchell notes that our area has a rich musical history, making it an appropriate locale for the festival. “The Durham Armory is a place where jazz musicians played. This area was not only strong in blues tradition, the basis of jazz, but also had a very strong soul movement.” She also stresses that jazz is not a relic of the past. “It is important because it is one
of the few purely American musical art forms. It is the basis for other Black American Music forms, including rap, hip hop, R&B, and soul.”
Above all though, Mitchell hopes the Art of Cool festival will broaden and expand the local audience for jazz. With ticketed and free, day and night options, and an innovation conference to boot, she has high expectations for meeting that goal. “Expect to experience the best of Durham’s culture through music, food, and fun.”
The Art of Cool Festival 2015 will be taking place in Downtown
Durham from April 24th - 26th. Tickets and info available at:

WALTER RALEIGH, ASTRONAUT
WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON
Who was Sir Walter Raleigh? Not the statue. Not the stiff portraiture. But the man. Through the long lens of 400 years, we might be tempted see him as some Elizabethan dandypants traipsing about singing, “Hey, Nonny Nonny!” Yet, he was just a guy who put on his pantaloons one leg at a time, like the rest of us. In fact, Walter Raleigh was, by any measure, an impressive cat: adventurer, explorer, mariner, entrepreneur, politician, scholar, courtier, pirate, writer, poet, soldier, spy, astronaut. Okay, perhaps he wasn’t an astronaut. But he certainly would be if alive today. There seems to be very little this guy could not do and we should be proud to live in the city bearing his name. Oh, and that little bit of Latin at the end of his poem? It translates to, “The World Turns.” He arguably predicted a very successful soap opera!
A renaissance man who happened to be alive during the Renaissance, our city’s namesake was born in 1552 in the southwest of England – Hayes Barton, to be exact. Sound familiar? In his time, Walter Raleigh was sort of a big deal on the merits of his writing alone. A gifted poet, he pioneered the use of placing “–eth” at the end of random verbs. He was no slouch on the battlefield either, and engaged in a series of really horrible, forgotten wars fought by soldiers with lances and silly helmets.
As an explorer and brimming with royal charters, Walter Raleigh was all up in The New World. In a series of expeditions

to the Americas, he founded The Lost Colony then, as the name might imply, lost it. His journeys brought new luxuries to Europeans; Raleigh introduced the potato, without which there would be no Mr. Potato Head. The indigenous people showed him how to plant tobacco and, in exchange, he shared the joys of smallpox.
Eventually, after years of kissing up to Queen Elizabeth, he kissed up a little too much with one of her hand maidens. Something happened involving his codpiece. Next thing he knew, Walter found himself imprisoned in the Tower of London. He continued in and out of royal favor until something really pissed off King James. Raleigh’s reward for
living a totally awesome life was to get his head unceremoniously divorced from his body. Up to the last minute, Walter Raleigh was a badass. He egged on his executioner, “Let us dispatch. At this hour my ague comes upon me. I would not have my enemies think I quaked from fear.”
An ague is a chill, by the way. Walter Raleigh was quite a guy. He even got a first-rate city named in his honor. Perhaps we can all take a page from Sir Walter’s book and strive to live just such an exceptional life in which every day is The New World. The thought of it sends an ague up my spine.

THE WORLD RECORD YO-YO BOYWORDS: FRANK WALSER | PHOTOS: KIERSTEN PORTER
In late December of 1972, a young Greensboro boy made national news when he broke the world record for consecutive hours of yo-yo-ing. The boy who yo-yo-ed for 52 straight hours became an instant celebrity. His picture was featured on the front page of the Greensboro News & Record and remained a prominent story in the paper for four days running. His picture appeared in countless other newspapers far across the country. He and his family were treated to free meals at restaurants all over town. In the weeks after his incredible feat, he would get up everyday and interview with a different morning radio show before going to school. One day, a representative of the Duncan Yo-Yo Company held an exhibition at his school. Students were given free yo-yos and the day off to celebrate in his honor. He was even invited to be on the Johnny Carson show, but had to decline because his parents did not want him to miss school.
Obviously, the boy’s accomplishment had a significant effect on his own life, but it also had a interesting effect on other children. From roughly 1973 to 1975, a sort of mania took hold of kids from all over the state of North Carolina. Everyone wanted to be like the “Yo-Yo Kid,” so, during that time span, hundreds of world records were set or broken by young North Carolinians.
At this point, you must be wondering about a few different things like “who was this ambitious, yo-yo toting, boy
celebrity?” “How did an 11 year-old stay awake for 52 hours?” “What on earth inspired him to try to break the record?” The “Yo-Yo Kid” is none other than Slim’s owner/mastermind, Van Alston.
When I asked Van why he did it, I was surprised to learn it wasn’t part of some grand scheme, rather, a product of missing a yo-yo contest held at Sears, where his friend Ken Garner took second place, winning a new bike and a giant trophy. On the other hand, I wasn’t surprised to learn Van never sought his parents approval before calling the Greensboro News & Record about his endeavor. His parents did not figure it out until they picked up the paper and saw their son on the front page. When I asked Van how he did it, he replied “a lot of coffee and a lot of enthusiasm, and my friends stayed over.” Well, it wasn’t quite that easy. He then described how he had to “yo-yo out the car window” when he left the house and what it was to “yo-yo in the bathroom”. Imagine!
In the end, I believe it’s safe to say Van created quite a stir and setting a world record at age 11 is pretty impressive. It shouldn’t matter that Darby McClusky broke Van’s record a mere two weeks later, but for a fleeting moment, Van was the man, well boy, of the hour. He was and remains for us, the “Yo-Yo Kid.”

Stop and say hi to Van at Slim’s located at 227 S Wilmington St.

NEW BELGIUM X OAKS & SPOKESDIRTY ART RIDE
WORDS: ANFERNEY AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: SEANO
Remember that time Oak City Hustle linked up with New Belgium and Oaks & Spokes to put on a pop-up art show deep in the trails of the woods? That was kind of awesome.
I have always felt that captivating art can be shaped in exploring unique juxtapositions. To pair seemingly disconnected elements is a little trick of mine when fast tracking a path to interesting ideas. Speaking of fast tracking, why not put an art show up on a single track dirt bike trail a few miles into the woods and watch as bikers approach in bewilderment as they trek along.
We approached some of these bikers as they unexpectedly engaged with the art. They had questions like, “Did you guys do this?”, “How did you get this stuff so far out here?”, and my favorite, “Are you guys trying to sell these out here?” Yes sir. We couldn’t get a proper booth at the Fairgrounds so we decided the next best place to sell large pieces of art was out in the middle of the woods to mountain bikers who carry no money and will
be completely incapable of carrying anything back to civilization.
The real reason we did it was simply to do it. Working with local artists to add a bit of incredulity to an otherwise predictable, albeit beautiful Sunday afternoon is reason enough. The more we explore, the more insight we will draw on ourselves and our place on this planet. A little too metaphysical for hanging a few pieces of artwork on branches? Maybe, but so what?!
I encourage all of you to look at the world as a place to explore uncommon pairings and share them with the rest of us. As we continue to define our unique and burgeoning Raleigh culture it will hinge on all of us adding anomalous ingredients, stirring the pot and serving it up wherever we least expect it.
