Current wheat breeding programs in Croatia are

redirected toward sustainable agriculture with

special emphasis on low input in agricultural

practice and increased yield with high bread making

quality

Market prices and enviromental concerns favor low-input wheat

Creating high quality, high yielding and at the same time low input cultivars in our environmental conditions

Long term breeding work started in 1994

Three crossing combination Divana x Soissons Soissons x Perla Soissons x Mura

Field trials from 2002 till 2005 were conducted as random block design with 4 repetitions

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil type was dystric luvisol (silty loam texture) volume =1,59 g/cm²pH (H2O) =6,03 pH (KCl) =5,15 %humus =1,65% K2O = 20,03 mg/100 g of soil

P2O5 = 9,08 mg/100 g of soil

All genotypes and standard varieties were grown under the same conditions (fertilization, plant protection,...)

During the field trials Comisson for variety recognition conducted their trials

As a result in 2005 three winter wheat varieties were recognized Kalista, Matea and Helia

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Graph 1 Yield of the new winter wheat varieties Kalista, Matea and Helia in

comparison to standards

1. Newly registrated winter wheat varieties Kalista, Matea and Helia represent new winter variety model which can be described as low input.

2. Grain, meal and bread quality of aforementioned varieties are on a high level.

3. These new varieties have high genetic potential for grain yield according to presented results.

4. Breeding programs targeting low-iput enviroments should include low-input selection enviroments to maximize selection gains.
