of experience and know-how
in aviation insurance
Eight decades ago, in 1935, the Compagnie Belge d’Assurances Aviation –
Belgische Maatschappij voor Lucthvaartverzekeringen (Belgian Aviation Insurance
Company or Aviabel) was created. Under the impulse of an Antwerp broker,
it becomes the first specialised aviation insurer in Belgium.
Aviabel’s first policy is issued to King Leopold III, who is
extremely interested in the development of aviation.
The annual accounts for

Business is booming for the Belgian national airline Sabena, along with

Belgian insurers and

During World War II, Aviabel’s activities are reduced
to a minimum. After the war, civil aviation resumes,
bringing a new start for Aviabel. It is at this point that the
reinsurance activity is also launched.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Aviabel grows to
become a stable and respected player in
the aviation insurance market. Experience
and know-how remain two essential pillars
of that success.
By the late 20th century and early 21st century,
Aviabel has become the undisputed market
leader in the Benelux region for aviation risks.
The company acquires portfolios from Josi and
the Nederlandse Luchtvaartpool. Aviabel Re and
the branch office in Amsterdam are also founded.
In 2007 Aviabel moves to an office building on
Avenue Louise in Brussels. In 2012 Cécile Coune
becomes CEO of the insurance company.
Aviabel is a reliable, stable,
financially rock-solid player,
as the A- ratings awarded to
Aviabel by the rating agencies
Standard & Poor’s and AM Best
certainly attest.
