OVER BIRD DEATHS GRANYJLLE MV-The Washing
ton Colinty Dertte^ratic chairman was today lined up wjth Conservation Commissioner Louis A. Wehlc in the state official's battle over the Bureau of Game.
Francis, j . Tierncy said t h a t j Wehle had contributed more to the I conservation movement than arjvj other individual in the history of; New York State. j
The chairman ma3e that statement in a telegram that he sent to Robert Thompson, Wavcrly. Tiog<* County, president of the New York ! State Conservation Council. |
Thompson Friday s a i d WeHle; was "incompetent."
Tierncy asked in his telegram j whether Thompson^ views w e r e "prompted by the fact that you! yourself were an unsuccessful seek- j er for the position of conservation! commissioner. . .?" •
Thompson's comment stemmed i from Wchlc's criticism of Dr. E.! L. Cheatum, chief of the Bureau of; Game. The commissioner h»d as- j scrtcd that Cheatum was rcsponsi- j ble for the death of several thou- j sand pheasants on a state farm. Cheatum has denied responsibility.
Gov. Averell Harriman has ordered an investigation and has said he will appoint three outstanding conservationists to do the job.
Thompson is a Democrat. Tierncy said that Wchje's accom
plishments in Washington, County had included the saving of "thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stocked fish."
He said that Wehle had made improvements in the county over the objection of some "so-called" career employees of the bureau.
Tierncy has been active in the Federation of Fish and Game Clubs of Washington County.

Janis added that the show was handicapped from the start by its Saturday night position.
"I'm not so sure you can do a warm-type shoW, such as ours was,
'Not when you're up against shows like Perry Como, Jackie Gleason' and Jimmy Durante."
And it looks as if Saturday night is going to be even more slam-bang next season, with Gleason going back to his hour-long format and I Sid Ccasar being brought in to j bolster the NBC ratings
