Welcome to English Olympics!!!!

The Athlete’s Oath:

• "In the name of all the competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport, and the honour of our teams."

Event 1: Taboo

• One person from each team will come to the front of the room.

• I will write a word on the board…the person in the front CANNOT look at the word.

• Everyone else must use ENGLISH to describe the secret word without saying it!

• The first team to guess correctly is the winner.

Event 2: Descriptive Drawing

• Within your teams, you will get into partners.

• Partner 1 will be given a picture. Partner 2 CANNOT look at the picture.

• Partner 1 will describe the picture to Partner 2, as Partner 2 draws it.

• Both teams will choose which group drew the best picture.

• I will judge whose picture is the best, and that team wins

Event 3: “I have never…”

• Each team needs a representative.

• Each representative will hold up 10 fingers.

• A person from one of the teams will complete the sentence, “I have never…”

• If the representatives HAVE done this, they have to put a finger down.

• The last person with fingers still up is the winner, and their teams wins!

• I will divide you into groups.

• Your group will create a sport.

• After 20 minutes each group will present your sport to the class.

• Each person in your group will need to speak

Come up with…

• A name for your sport

• At least 5 rules for your sport

• The goal of the game (example: score 21 points)

• A way to creatively explain the game to the class

• It stands for the warmth and welcoming spirit of the Brazilian people.

• The core symbol shows people joining hands, while the color scheme reflects Rio's environment: yellow for the sun, blue for the sea, and green for the forests.

Torch Relay

• For the flame to travel to Rio, over 12,000 people were torchbearers.

• The flame traveled over 20,000 km ( miles) from Greece all the way to Rio.

• It took 106 days for the Olympic flame to travel to Rio.

Torch Route

• Traveled from Olympia, Greece, to Switzerland, to Brazil.

• Once in Brazil, the torch flame traveled all over the country and ended in Rio.

Who carries the flame?

• Requirements:

– Must be at least 14 years old

– Must be able to carry the torch for 400 meters (437 yards)

*Usually a person is chosen because they have made a significant contribution to their community.

Opening Ceremonies August 5th

• Long distance runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima was the last torchbearer, who ignited the Olympic cauldron, a stunning mirrored pyre.

• The Olympian had suffered heartbreak in Athens in 2004 when he was attacked by an intruder while in the lead in the marathon but still managed to win bronze.

• He has since become synonymous with sportsmanship and perseverance.
