What is Special About Omokoroa No 1 School?
We believe that Omokoroa No 1 School is a great option for Year 7 & 8 learning!
At Omokoroa No 1, we have much to offer your child that they will not be able
to access at an Intermediate School.
Because of the smaller numbers of students within our school environment:
• We are better positioned to make sure that EVERY child has his/her needs
met.
• We provide a range of academic, sporting, social and cultural opportunities
that enable ALL children to participate and succeed, not just a selected few.
• No child at Omokoroa No 1 School will ‘disappear’. Every child is known, not
just by their own teacher, but by every teacher in the school. At Omokoroa
No 1 School, EVERY child is an individual, EVERY child will be encouraged to
reach their full potential.
The Value of Continuity
From the Ministry of Education website:
Studies have shown that children experience a drop in attainment their first
year of secondary school.
“Students who make two transitions, to a middle school and then to secondary
school, appear to experience the achievement drop twice (Anspaugh, 1998:
Felner, Primevera & Cauce 1981). There appears to be evidence that any
transition may cause a drop in achievement, regardless of the age at which it
takes place (Suffolk Education Department 1997). This is of importance in New
Zealand where students often change schools at two levels of transition (Year 6-
7 and Year 8-9).”
Your child leaves Omokoroa No 1 School with the best of primary education
blended with the best of intermediate education.
How do we do this?
• By having continuity of care and consistency of expectations.
• By consistently encouraging and supporting students to make decisions
about their learning.
• By ensuring equitable access to school resources and opportunities for all
students.
• By utilizing staff strengths and enthusiasm for working with emerging
adolescents.
• By promoting senior students as school leaders.
By the end of Year 8, students will:
• Have an excellent grounding in literacy and numeracy.
• Be able to lead their own learning.
• Be able to take responsibility for themselves.
• Have developed leadership and communication skills.
• Be prepared to make a smooth transition to High School.
Quality Education
Omokoroa No 1 School has a reputation as a provider of quality education for
children and has achieved excellent E.R.O. reports.
As a country school only 10 km from Bethlehem Village we offer an exciting
range of educational opportunities, provided by our team of dedicated and
enthusiastic staff.
All this in an attractive rural setting with a diverse and very supportive
community.
Children are very fortunate to be able to continue their schooling from Year 1
through to Year 8.
Omokoroa No 1 School caters for students from the age of 5 to 13.
Curriculum
Omokoroa No 1 School offers students a broad, well balanced curriculum. Our
programmes are based on the National Curriculum documents and incorporate
all National Standards requirements.
Students are provided with learning opportunities that meet the needs of their
preferred learning styles. They are supported through the learning process and
encouraged to take ownership of and lead their own learning.
Our Year 7 teacher is Mrs Bridget Broadhurst who has accumulated many years
experience at this level in both Intermediate schools and full primary schools.
Our Year 8 teacher, Mrs Leanne McEwan, is also a very experienced senior
school teacher, having taught at an Intermediate school in Auckland.
There are many areas of the curriculum which require specialised
programmes to meet the needs of the students in Year 7 & 8.
Omokoroa No 1 School provides the opportunities to meet these needs.
Education Outside the Classroom
Omokoroa No 1 School offers a wonderful range of outdoor experiences for
senior students. Camps are held regularly to encourage team-building,
confidence in the outdoors, and additional educational extension.
During their time in the Year 7/8 level, all students will have the chance to
attend:
• A school sports camp at Totara Springs, Matamata for one week
• A two day ski camp at either Whakapapa or Turoa
• A water sports camp at Rotorua

writing, mathematics and art competitions.
All pupils participate in career education to help prepare for informed subject
choices at college.
Information and Communications Technology
Students are provided with opportunities to use technological equipment as a
regular part of their learning. This enables them to access and present
information and communicate with others on the various technological devices
available. There are laptops, chromebooks, data projectors, digital video
cameras, ipods, Ipads, digital still cameras, on-stage sound system, and in-
classroom soundfields system. All students may bring their own device to school
each day.
Students will learn the basics of software, word processing and desktop
publishing. The computer is a valuable vehicle for teaching in different ways and
provides opportunities for students to :
• Develop and apply appropriate technological skills
• Design, create, test or modify their solutions to real life problems
• Become prepared to cope with, and contribute to, a technological society
• Communicate their learning in appropriate formats

relevant and irrelevant information

is one of the most up to date purpose built technology centres in New Zealand.
The resources provided and the exciting programmes will enable a whole new
range of learning experiences to be covered.

Personal Development
The analogy of the ‘Big fish in the little sea’ applies to our senior school. We value the
contributions that all our Year 7 & 8 students make to the life of our school,
irrespective of their background, ability, personality and talents.
Omokoroa No 1 School senior pupils are active, responsible and confident young
people. They are prepared to take risks and are relatively free of many of the
pressures that their peers in other schools may well face.
Omokoroa No 1 School seniors are encouraged:
1. To accept leadership opportunities – Year 7/8 students are encouraged to develop
their leadership skills by supporting programmes and activities at all levels of the
school.
2. To lead as role models – our senior students are expected to set high standards for
other members of the school to follow. Hard work, consideration for others and
high standards of behavior are expected at all times.

responsibility of such task as :
• Sports coaching and umpiring

assemblies

recognition of their hard work and positive role model status within the school.
These students will assist in organising some worthwhile activities, foodbank
collections, fundraising for charities, wheels day, lunchtime sports and
competitions.

It is our belief that Year 7/8 students at Omokoroa No 1 School are very well
prepared for their college years.
Evidence of this is provided by:
• The many students who enter college at an accelerant class level.
• The success rate of our students at college level in academic, sporting and
cultural activities.
• The ability of our students to adapt quickly to a new learning and social
environment.
• The significant proportion of Omokoroa No 1 School students who have
been given leadership roles at College level (including three Head Boys a
Head Girl and numerous Deputy Head and Prefect positions at various
colleges in the last few years).
